After a conversation with a fellow artist, @ron.landstudio it dawned on me go to my flat files and pull from the archives this print I made many years ago. Inspired by the Buddha stones of a small town in Kyushu, I photographed the decayed sculptures with my vintage Nikon camera. I was eager to see the first vestiges of this past and reveal it on paper which this print represents; it’s a photo-etching printed while in residence at Kala Art Institute (now “Kala Institute Studio”) in Berkley, California. The Institute has large presses which allowed me to initiate a series of large prints based on different iconographies from East and South East Asia. This print shows images of the small town of Usuki where the stones were exposed to inclement weather for centuries; hence showing many signs of decay, a symbol of impermanence. Buddhism was introduced to Japan through Kyushu in the 6th century. This photo-etching includes chine-collé with a running-style calligraphy. It’s a variable edition of three. I kept one for my archives. It’s always a pleasure to share works long forgotten…
