A view on social identity.... Professor Craig Kyle Hemphill I try to give my children wisdom as a brown father from a brown father's perspective. I read about many successful brown people degrading themselves to be a part of organizations or events that typcally deny access to them and other brown people. For example, a racist golf club that shuts out African descendent patrons but secretly allows the one token to play the course(s). It reminds me of the one neighbor when I was a child who would not let me swim in their backyard pool. Or the one neighbor where I could not play video games nor touch action figures. We never stayed true acquaintances. Later, there is truth and reconciliation and that is a very Christian thing to do. Yet the life experiences remain. The point is, why be a successful brown person stuck in seeking approval from people who will never accept you? Go build your own golf club. Make sure that you have a pool, purchase a video game and action figures so that your children are not left out of the fun. Brown people should never degrade themselves to feel accepted or important. Peoole and organizations that do not accept you as great are largely mediocre despite their eye-candy appeal. Everything that glitters is not gold. Most are cubic zarconian. Yet, you are great anyway.
