Happy Birthday to Country Music artist Ronna Reeves, turning 60 today

Loubie, my first dog, sweet, smart, funny, opinionated, adventurous with amber eyes that pierced your soul while melting your heart and a blue+red Merle coat that has strangers calling out “beautiful dog!”, died on Monday, August 24 ~3:13pm. She was with us at home. If you knew her, would you please share a feeling or memory.(Swipe photo for more thoughts too long for one caption.)

When we found each other at Nashville Humane Assoc. @nashvillehumane via @countryroadsrescue on a co-writing detour, I was looking for a small dog who didn’t shed or bark. She stood up to greet us in her kennel, took a kibble, laid down with her paws under the wire trying to get as close as possible to our petting hands, then walked with me so gently I thought she had slipped the leash. 3x bigger than planned, a lot sheddy, she was the perfect studio dog who didn’t bark until a year later when she gave a groundhog what for.

(Sound on:) She knew over 150 words, and spoke a few with her buttons; her favorite was “adVENture!” One delightful exchange, Jenny had pizza but hadn’t offered any. Loubie got up from begging, walked over to her buttons, carefully hit “Love you!” followed by “Mama Jenny”, and walked back to Jenny, sitting down to stare at her. Loubie got pizza.

Loubie went everywhere with me... cowriting all over Nashville (bork for a fourth), beach bumming/mangrove kayaking/scooter riding in Key West, emotionally supporting me on a 3-month MD gig at Milwaukee Rep, and fishing, hiking, and camping from MI to MO to ME. She did vanlife with me in two SUVs, tracked trails like a champ through rain and snow, and equally loved sunbathing and snow frolicking.

7 years was far too few for this extraordinary creature, and I miss her terribly. I’m sad and mad not to have her here, bullying me for pets, following me around, ever attentive even when fast asleep. I imagine her form still here in the many places she would be in our home, in the bed, on the couch, in the car with her snoot an arm reach behind me like a soft-mouthed monster ready to devour a chimken nugget or piece of anything I was eating on our overnight drives between NYC and Nashville.

Listen, I usually try to avoid crying on the internet at all costs but today I am making an exception because REBA FREAKING MCENTIRE CUT MY SONG 😭

This video was taken when I got the call in 2023 that Reba cut “One Night in Tulsa”. I had just left the gym (that’s why I look so fabulous) and had to pull over because I was crying so hard. A lot of time has passed since that day but that raw emotion of finding out all those years of cutting my teeth on music row was finally being recognized I still carry today. I guess it really is a 10 year town.

This song was written in January of 2018 with Thom McHugh and Neal Coty at an office in Berry Hill. I didn’t sleep for a few nights after writing that song. It felt like the kind of song that could change my life and I think that scared the crap out of me. I went on to record it and this song has been with me across the country playing small dive bars with a few people in the room to arenas opening up for bigger artists. It’s always been the one that turns heads and locks people in and it I still can’t believe it made its way to the hands of the Queen of Country Music.

This moment is even sweeter because it’s celebrated with so many amazing people. I have to thank Liz Morin, Ronna Reeves and Cindy Owen for being bad ass champions of songs and scoring this cut for me. Allen Mitchell and Erv Woolsey for believing in my artistry enough to hire Showbiz Row to pitch my songs. Carnival Music for fighting the good fight with me. My current management for absolutely kicking ass for me. My parents and fiancé for the support to pursue a career in country music. And of course last but not least Neal Coty and Thom McHugh. I am forever grateful for every time I got to sit in a room with the two of the best songwriters in town.

I’ve already gone on too long but I have to say.. the little girl who sang the National Anthem at all those rodeos she was entered in with the hopes of following in Reba’s footsteps is grinning ear to ear. Thank you Jesus and Reba for this full circle moment 😭
