Convo w/ Ron Tau @rontau Q: You seem to (re)charge your work with a sense of novelty by deliberately integrating a certain uncouthness and nonsense into the objects you create. (i.e. printed type adorned like clothing tags, plastic cybernetic cell structures that act as rainsticks, responsive web-based type that jumps with every decibel) Can you describe whether this choice aims to de-bias or is an absurdist musing?  A: It’s as important to me to debias as it is to muse, and to be taken and led by musings. The most serious people tend to be the funniest, and vice versa. I am inspired by both and would like to create work that embodies both rigor and absurdity. Q: Can you reflect on your position regarding amateurism and play after more than a decade in design? Think Ed Fella’s exit-level designer. A: I feel largely the same about design as when I started. I find my cynicism rarely gets in the way when I want to make something, and I’m not too bothered about the discourse around what design can and cannot do. Ed Fella is one example of a designer I admire who has created for more than 3 decades, and no adverbs necessary because the act of constant creation speaks for itself. Rick Poynor once wrote that Ed’s work is the product of a unique mentality, that it is utterly obsessive, and that art is always obsessive—that it is this relentlessness of an entirely self-chosen enterprise that helps to set the activity apart as “art.” I paid my dues to my relentless obsessions every day for more than a decade and will do so for decades to come.

Some works center on domestic and familial memory, while others address broader themes of identity, labor, resilience, and power. Materials range from traditional cloth and thread to unconventional substrates such as plastic and Kevlar, expanding the language of textile beyond its expected forms. Rather than a passive backdrop, fabric emerges as an active material, one that protects records, and transforms. Together, the works invite viewers to reflect on the materials that hold us, and the histories they continue to carry. Call for Submissions! Paprika! Volume 13, Issue 7: BEST BEFORE People often believe that there is a “best” time to do certain things, after which one should stop. Best Before invites you to consider how we relate to change and expiration. Some changes are abrupt, while others unfold gradually, sometimes even imperceptibly. Yet each shift—no matter how subtle—can lead to something profound. If deterioration, like the traditional understanding of time, is to be perceived as a non-reversible, linear process, how do we draw the line between the “once good” and the “now bad”? Who decides when something is no longer suitable, usable, or relevant? The idea of stamping a best-before date on every product also reflects an urge toward consumption. Should we use something simply because we fear “waste”? Or does the drive to maximize every moment and resource carry its own forms of loss? This issue calls for discourse, contemplation, and reinterpretation on expiration, consumption, and transformation through time—a can of thoughts sealed in the form of a broadsheet newspaper, which we hope will inspire before it, too, expires. After over a year in the works, I’m proud to finally unveil the new brand identity at NewWorld. It officially launched earlier this year — but I’m only now getting the chance to share it properly. This journey was a deep collaboration with longtime creative partner @rontau of @meat.studio who helped us reimagine how we show up in the world. As a creative agency grounded in Cultural Intelligence, we redesigned the brand with audience and clarity in mind — led by a vision to be simple, direct, and a better reflection of our evolution. The visual inspiration began with a minimal line-and-dot system, referencing strategic cartography, course correction, and mapping out what’s next. Formerly A—B, we needed a new identity that could carry our new name — NewWorld — and embody a future-forward spirit. The result is a refreshed identity built to carry us forward. Huge thanks to Ron, @aprilypop , Matthias (for his coding wizardry), and the entire Meat Studio crew who brought this to life. Also special shoutout to Jinah Lee for her boundless creative energy, working with Meat and helping us through this transition 🌟

She runs a successful freelance business and has been an educator for colleges and universities across Ontario since 2014. Jenn Nguyen is a product designer based in Miami.
