“Work for me is service. Absolutely service.”

Meet Melanie Styles (@atl_mel), owner of @atlantautilityworks @atlantautilityworksbrewpub in East Point, where we filmed a few interviews last month.

For her, work isn’t just what she does, it’s who she serves. Running a restaurant in a food desert. Creating a space of the community, by the community. Serving healthy food and unique drinks where it matters most.

“Acts of service is my MO. That’s definitely my work.”

What’s Work celebrates the people who show up for their communities while also showing up for their own creative practice. The dual identity of service and self.

Thank you to Melanie and Atlanta Utility Works for hosting these conversations.

“I was working at a warehouse making pretty good money—good enough to be self-sufficient. But I hated my life. So I quit.”

This is Christian Riven-Michael Kinkle (@monsieurkinkle). His vow? Never go back to the warehouse.

“Work is more so just being fulfilled. I just wanna be fulfilled with things that I do in my life.”

There’s still time to check out📍What’s Work Exhibition through Jan 9 @ Sovereign Sounds, East Point

“Work for me is a real job. Nine to five. Not being out here in the streets.”

Before What’s Work opened, we asked Atlanta: What does work mean to you?

For some, work is survival. Getting off the streets. Finding stability. But the barriers are real—“It’s hard for people with felonies. They can’t get no job. They gotta struggle.”

What’s Work explores every definition. Because the conversation about who gets to work, who gets to create, and who gets recognized as an artist starts here—with honest voices from the community.
