how to bitchface (2011)

Rookie Mag was an online magazine for teenagers created by Tavi Gevinson, an American writer, blogger, and actress. She started the blog in 2008 at just age twelve, initially focusing on fashion and style, then shifting to pop culture and feminist discussion by the age of fifteen. Gevinson started her acting career in 2013, and went on to star in the HBO Max series Gossip Girl.

One of the magazines I kept coming back to before starting Komorebe Magazine was Rookie Magazine (@rookiemag ). I loved that it always cared more about people, Student and process than the final product.

Petra Collins and many other creatives built their own worlds through Rookie, and the culture and aesthetics they created have become part of what we now call “new.”

New culture almost always starts with individuals. But we tend to pay attention only after it has been picked up by bigger industries and larger audiences.

Maybe it’s worth paying a little more attention to independent artists, magazines, and emerging creatives—not just the ones that already have the biggest budgets and fan bases. Most of the things we love today started there.

we need to see one another making stuff in order to make stuff ourselves ✨

snippets from my deep dive into rookie mag & how it shaped the culture. I really am a girl philosopher.

I have this insane idea that I can become a bestseller on substack without writing guru type get rich by being yourself-style articles, but instead by giving y’all the kind of well researched, smart, analytical essays and deep dives like this one that go way beyond wiki summaries and actually pull out the articles and archival research ya know?

so yes, this essay is paywalled, but for $1.75 a week? I think it’s worth it 💞

wowowow this took FOREVER but here is my first set of media recs - zine edition! 🖊️ i’ve been making zines for 12+ years and have gathered some cool collections !!

the first book is girl zines by alison piepmeier, which takes a deep dive look into the history and feminist angle of zines. very educational!! it has parts on intersectionality (which for a feminist book published in 2009 is pretty good), and at the very beginning it even brings up scrapbooking ✂️and how it was/is so important in bringing women together. so it’s natural the zine resolve came about thru junk journaling!!

next is the stolen sharpie revolution which is literally required reading for anyone beginning to make zines 🖊️ it’s quick and easy and also free online (i linked it it)

i’ve also linked this one, the riot grrrl collection. k and easy and also free online (i linked it it)

i’ve also linked this next one, the riot grrrl collection. ‼️📓 it’s a chunky hard cover coffee table style book for the coolest coffee tables i guess? but it’s fat with countless zine scans + commentary and history etc

FINALLY we have the rookie yearbooks, the books that changed my brain chemistry. they are the entire reason i know what zines are.. an online zine for teenagers/baby adults specifically the outcasts/weirdos/freakazoids like myself to really feel seen and be accepted. they sculpted me and introduced me to so much. my autistic obsession with rookie and @tavitulle is the reason im cool.

anyway. zines are cool! should i post more like this?? have fun be safe love you!

does anyone else remember rookie mag please say yes ‼️‼️‼️ my entire personality development as a teenager was literally ctrl c ctrl v from this site. i had timers set for the times their posts went out… it was THE guidebook. it was open and honest about stuff and made teenagers feel safe and seen and cool 🆒 even dorks like me ➡️ for moodboard (partly using my own photos)

if someone made a rookie for adult women i’d read it but i think @tavitulle is too busy sadly. but maybe she’ll see this and drop a 💖 and i’ll fangirl die a little. idk.

i live breathed and ate rookie. like it was my bloodstream. i think as a very isolated homeschooled kid without many friends it was really one of the only places i felt like i was seen. i have all the yearbooks, and an extra one i bought to cut up recently heheh

obvs been a fan of @petrafcollins since then too, i have her book babe and the postcards that came with it when u pre ordered or whatever. it might be signed but im too lazy to look. but yeah basically this is why im cool in case u were wondering.

Last October I dyed my hair blue and the journey I’ve been on since was worth noting down. Hair colour theory is real, and this is my take on what “effortless” looked like in my world.
