it’s not quite solstice yet, but that winter hibernation arc is definitely kicking in. we’ve had a lot of snow, the kind that feels like the minnesota of old, and my introverted self has been feeling that inward pull like something fierce.

as for writing, i’m still working on dream date. it began nearly a decade ago as a short story about love and robots that i workshopped at UC Denver. i intend to expand it to novella length. we’ll see where this first draft takes me.

i’m still querying small birds and currently have the full manuscript out with one agent (!!!). i’m waiting to hear back from 22 others and plan to send a new batch of queries after the new year.

i’ve also been spending more intentional time on my substack, the room is on fire. this fall, after a few honest conversations with writer friends i trust, i decided to take that space more seriously. that meant slowing down, actually editing, and sitting with the work instead of posting first drafts on impulse. i’m really glad i listened. the experience has been more rewarding, and i feel more pride than cringe reading what i’ve shared there. i've highlighted a few of my more recent newsletters above
.
recently, i stumbled upon an old google drive from 2012–2014 and… wow. early novels, essays, poems. some of the writing honestly startled me in the best way. i have theories about that, and i’ll be unpacking them in a future substack post. for now, i’ll just say this: motherhood and pregnancy, while incredible and worth every bit of it, can absolutely rob you of your brain.

i’ve also launched a new project, root smoke. i’m currently reading submissions for poetry and prose, as well as art & more. i have visions of anthologies and themed print editions down the line. root smoke is on instagram and facebook, and we’ll be publishing digitally on substack. come find us. submit your work!!!

the final slide is a few lines from a poem pulled straight from my notes app, both written and then rediscovered while sitting in the parent pick-up line.

this time of year can be heavy and draining. i hope you’re finding small pockets of warmth and time for art!!! and embracing your own winter cocooning!!!
