Materials:

* Clear glass container
* Shallow bowl or plate
* Water
* Food coloring (optional)
* Small tea light candle
* Lighter

How it works:

As the candle burns, it heats the gases inside the glass. When the flame goes out, the gases cool, water vapor condenses, and the pressure inside drops.

The greater atmospheric pressure outside the glass pushes the water upward.

The science: Combustion, thermal expansion and contraction, atmospheric pressure, and the ideal gas law.

DIY Grommet Tutorial
Ever tried adding grommets and thought, WTF am I doing? Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you out:
1. Double up your edges – give your grommet something solid to bite into.
2. Center your aim – grab your grommet, note the center, and mark where you want the hole.
3. Punch that hole – use the punch and hammer to cut out the hole (it’s harder than you think! Rotating the punch can help, especially if one side’s sharper).
4. Set the grommet – place the grommet beneath the material, and decide which side you want to show.
5. Cap it off – put the cap on top, grab the setter, and hammer it in place. Repeat as needed.
