Thank you for coming back for PART 2 🫶🏾❤️

We all make mistakes. Growth is owning them, learning, and moving differently.

After three years of salon ownership and over a decade in this industry, Goldman Sachs helped me see where I needed to grow. My biggest lesson? Be intentional about who you build with. Protect your peace, energy, and vision. You can care about people without taking everyone with you. 🌱

If you’ve been looking for a reason to apply to Houston’s Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, let me give you a few.

I’m sharing what I learned, how it challenged me as a salon owner, and why I’m glad I invested that time in myself and my business.

This is part one of my three-part series. Let’s get into it!

This year, I:
✨ Got my credit score over 700.
📈 Invested in the Stock Market
🎓 Graduated from Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, Cohort 45.
📍 Moved Rooted Salons from a five-chair salon into a two-chair suite.
🏆 Became the first winner of the TNT Hair Show Competition.
💍 Created “Black Love Through the Decades,” showcasing bridal loc styles inspired by the ’70s, ’90s, and future.
🤝 Brought together models, DJs, makeup artists, and support staff to bring my vision to the stage.
🪜Took steps toward becoming a beauty industry educator.
🪑Invested in growing Stormie Roots beyond the chair.

Some wins came through hard decisions, long nights, and starting over. I’m giving myself credit for all of it. ❤️

CLEAR THE DRAFTS! 📱✨ I used to own a fire five-chair salon, and so much of that chapter is still hiding in my phone.

Come behind the scenes as I share the memories, the lessons, and more of my life. I’m celebrating what I built while making room for the next version of Stormie Roots and Rooted Salons. 🤎

Give yourself some credit, sis. 👏🏾 Running a business, keeping a roof over your head, and putting money aside takes work, discipline, and clients who trust you.

You might still be working toward your bigger goals, but the stability you’re building deserves to be celebrated, too.

Send this to a hairstylist who needs a reminder: you’re doing better than you think. 🤎

1. Keep the clients you already have. Follow up, stay consistent, and give them a reason to trust you with their hair for years.

2. Know your numbers. A full book means very little if you don’t know what you earn after supplies, rent, taxes, and help.

3. Price for a sustainable career. Your rates need to support your life and the quality of care you provide.

4. Protect your body. Take breaks, set a schedule, and get help before exhaustion starts making decisions for you.

5. Keep learning. Trends change, products change, and your clients’ needs change. Stay a student of your craft.

6. Let people see your expertise. Share your results, your knowledge, and the way you care for clients. Your reputation can open doors beyond the chair.

If you’ve ever done a production or a hair show with me, you know I’m going to take care of my people. You’ll have something to eat, something to drink, and room to enjoy the experience.

But once we’re backstage, I’m locked in. I’m checking the hair, watching the time, and making sure everybody is ready to walk out feeling confident. That’s business mode for me.

I love the creative side of this industry, but the way I treat people matters just as much as the work they see onstage. I want my clients and my team to remember how they felt working with me. That’s the reputation I’m building, and I trust it to open the right doors. ❤️

Starter locs can have a little fun too! I added Marley hair for a quick style that gives my client more to play with while her locs are still starting out.

This is what I call an advanced loc style. ✨ Would you try it?

I know I’m meant to be successful because I keep making myself do hard things over and over again.

I put myself in rooms that challenge me to grow, speak up, learn more and show up before I feel ready.

I’m intentional about who I spend time with and who I do business with. I want to be around people who expect more from life and are willing to do the work to get there.

Every time I choose the hard thing, I prove to myself that I can handle what I’ve been praying for. 🤎
