Last Friday we had our Crunchy Providers Meet Up and polled our group for a question that they would like answered. Here we have several of our providers answering the question: "How do we support people with neurodivergencies?" Thank you to our providers: Sharon Montcalm, @continuumchiro @villagepsychllc @bestlifechiro and @rootedtherapiestx for your answers! And another huge thank you to Rachel Terrell of Rooted Therapies for hosting our March Meetup. Next Crunchy Providers Meet Up will be on April 17th from 10 am - 12 pm at @alphawomenswellness If you provide a service or product to the crunchy community of Flower Mound, we would love to have you join us!

Local educators, practitioners, and vendors came together to share resources, answer questions, and connect with families in our community. The goal of the Wholistic Wellness Market is simple: create a space where people can learn about different health approaches, meet trusted providers, and explore holistic products — without pressure. Thank you to the professionals who showed up to educate, the vendors who brought thoughtful products, and the community members who came curious and ready to learn. We appreciate everyone who helped make the first market a success. #DFWMoms#DFWWellness #HolisticMomsDFW #FamilyWellnessDFW #NaturalLivingDFW

Hi, I’m Rachel 🤍 Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapist | Autistic & ADHD Clinician | Founder Founder of Rooted & Rising Therapies in Lewisville, TX — serving families across DFW We provide pediatric speech, occupational, and feeding therapy for autistic and neurodivergent children and teens through child-led, play-based care grounded in sensory regulation — because regulation is the foundation for communication and growth. I’m proudly autistic and ADHD, diagnosed in my late 20s. That discovery reshaped both my personal story and my clinical lens. I understand my clients not only as a clinician, but through lived experience — including what it feels like to be misunderstood and the depth and brilliance of a neurodivergent brain. At Rooted, we don’t fix or mask children. We honor how their brains are wired. Our areas of support include: • Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) • AAC • Sensory integration • Responsive feeding We align therapy with how children naturally develop — because that’s when meaningful progress happens. Rooted is more than a clinic. It’s a space where kids feel safe, understood, and empowered to rise confidently into who they are ✨ #pediatrictherapy #dfwhealth #dfwpediatrictherapy #dfwmom #dfwmoms

PDA is a nervous system response autistic and neurodivergent people have when they perceive that their autonomy is being stripped from them. PDA can look like a defiance, being stubborn, or “bad.” You may be told “no,” they don’t do anything that isn’t their idea, and will either have a meltdown or escape when demands are placed or they aren’t in control. Really they are seeking and craving autonomy and control. They want to maintain regulation in their body and know it is easier to be regulated when they have autonomy. When they are triggered, their body goes into fight/flight/fawn/freeze and they are no longer in control of their body, words, or emotions. This can look like a meltdown over you opening their string cheese for them or your child ignoring you when you ask them to do something. Just because someone has a PDA profile doesn’t mean they can’t have expectations and boundaries. PDA people benefit from expectations and boundaries, however, the way we present them has to look different and not threaten their nervous system and autonomy. As adults, we often want to control they way children execute our directions. We want them to be little adults but that is an unrealistic expectation. They will not execute tasks the way an adult would. If you use the division of responsibility framework, the adult can set the expectation or boundary and the child can decide how they want to execute. The boundary, if you want to play outside in the cold, you have to wear a jacket. The child: can wear the jacket inside out, backwards, or upside down. They have the autonomy to choose whether to stay inside or how they want to wear their jacket outside. We want to provide as much autonomy as possible and keep demands and pressure low!! Offer options and opportunities for autonomy frequently. - comment more than ask/demand - incite curiosity and intrinsic motivation - be slow to react - provide opportunities for independence Comment your favorite ways to support PDA children

We know communication doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some autistic and neurodivergent children using scripting, echolalia, or video clips to communicate. When other people don’t understand children, we can use AAC to support communication and language development. We don’t want to take away their screens and powerful songs/videos. Instead we can pair AAC with a favorite YouTube clip to spark connection, laughter, and real conversations. When we follow a child’s interests and honor their communication style, we open the door to authentic, meaningful exchanges—whether it’s quoting a video, pushing buttons on a device, or combining both in creative ways. 💜 #AAC #NeurodiversityAffirming #ChildLedTherapy #NeuroNook

I had so many favorite moments during my conversation with Rachel, but this one was definitely a top favorite. Don’t go to someone who says, “We’re familiar.” Go to someone who says, “We’re trained. We’re certified. We have the experience.” Your child deserves more than surface-level support—they deserve the best. The kind backed by real knowledge, real credentials, and real results.
