A little mystery. A little revelation. Lemon Jell-O shots, taxidermy goats, neon flaming swords—and a whole lot of contemporary Mormon art.

In downtown Provo, Camilla Stark, Rusden Scott and LAZERos have opened The Outer Veil, a new gallery and gathering space growing out of their ARCH-HIVE collective.

With plum walls, pine-green trim, gilded fig leaves and a salon-style hang, the space embraces the strange and particular visual culture of Mormonism while making room for artists whose work doesn’t fit comfortably into either devotional art or straightforward criticism of the church.

“It’s different on purpose,” Scott says.

For their inaugural exhibition, Mormanity, the trio has created what Stark calls a “collecting of misfits”—a space for art that is challenging, sincere, self-aware and, occasionally, bizarre.

Anna McIllece takes us inside The Outer Veil in the latest at 15 Bytes.

Illness, surgery, hospitalizations, and even a death tried to prevent @roozden_scoot, @barrettburgin, @mormcore, @zachcolliernoise and I from presenting at the Mormon History Association conference last month, but we made it happen.

Our presentation was titled “If You Know, You Know: Sacred Subtext in Contemporary Mormon Art”. We each presented on how modern LDS artists, filmmakers, musicians, and even video game designers are creating work that deliberately includes multiple levels of understanding that are only revealed based on the knowledge of the consumer. Somehow we failed to all get a group photo.

It was a wonderful weekend spent learning and making connections in the community. We were excited to find out that the conference next year will be in Provo! Boy oh boy do we have a gallery for you to come and see.

I love photographing this family. When we first moved to this area they were some of the first people we noticed and thought, “we want to know them.” Now I had the honour of photographing the early days of their first child, who is perfect and has new sharpness in his eyes every time I see him.

The Springville show was incredible! If in anyway you can make it there, please do. Spend an hour or a day contemplating all that is the human experience and seeking to know the forces that are beyond ourselves. Just being in that space with 275 pieces, you can’t help but feel the hours, tears, thoughts, experiences, energies of all that is portrayed. Thank you so much for this privilege to be there among artists and friends and beauty. And thank you to the judges for seeing a little bit of that spiritual journey in my art so that I may share that with others in a big way.

I usually skew more black and white than I did with this photoshoot. It cleans up distractions, draws attention to composition, and feels classy and nostalgic. But Rusden and Camilla’s house was so full of green and gold I skewed the other way while editing this time around.

A few weeks ago we got photos taken by @louiseppelphotography at our crazy art-and-oddities-filled home. Every day with @roozden_scoot is so fun and we wanted to capture that energy in these photos.

I love the life we are building together. It’s as vibrant and eclectic and full as the walls of this home and I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else 💗

Also—if you are looking for this type of slice-of-life couple/family photos, we stridently recommend @louiseppelphotography as your photographer!!
