a video diary of Bali 🎥

I really didn’t know what to expect when I signed up for this retreat with @wearealchemycollective - deciding to fly across the world 3 weeks before @nycmarathon seemed like a huge risk, but it turns out it was perfect timing.

This was just the change in scenery I needed to get out of my head and make movement FUN again. We all know the toll that marathon training physically takes on your body, but we don’t talk enough about how hard it is on you mentally.

This past week, which was supposed to be my “peak week,” I ran 2.5 miles. TOTAL.

But I also surfed, swam, snorkeled, lifted, hiked, walked, yoga-d, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every day there were 3 workouts offered - a run, a strength class, and yoga. I got to do partner / group workouts again - something I’ve missed during the solo journey of marathon training. When we weren’t doing the workouts, we were spending time outside exploring the culture and traditions of Bali - from purification ceremonies in water falls to Kecak fire dances at sunset.

I got out of my social bubble of 20-30 something Arlingtonians and sweat alongside people of all ages from all walks of life - moms and daughters, cancer survivors, sisters, and friends of friends from DC that it took going all the way to Bali to finally get a chance to know. Our group meshed immediately - no cliques, no drama, just humans supporting humans, looking out for eachother, cheering each other on, and appreciating our surroundings together.

Reflecting on this past week, I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to be exactly where I needed to be, and for all the new people it brought into my life. I’m not saying I recommend skipping your peak week of marathon training for everyone, but I DO recommend prioritizing your mental health just as much as your physical health, and remembering that movement should be fun.

@wearealchemycollective has upcoming retreats planned for Tulum (2026), Nicaragua (2027) and Chamonix (2027). They’re also going back to Bali in 2027 and the waitlist is now open on their website.

Not every run needs to be a grind.

Most days, we’re building the engine in zone 2, keeping it easy and stacking the miles. But every now and then, let yourself open it up.
Find some speed.
Have a little fun with it.

There’s a time to build and a time to fly. Make sure you get both.
