In 1926, the pioneering modern choreographer Martha Graham founded her eponymous dance company. One year later, “Dance Magazine” (originally called “The American Dancer”) published its first issue.  The two institutions’ histories are twined together. Over the following decades, @marthagrahamdance became a profoundly influential force in a dance world that was rapidly evolving; “Dance Magazine” became that world’s foremost chronicler. “DM” critics wrote passionately about some of Graham’s most memorable works. Photographs, essays, and the occasional interview with Graham herself illuminated the choreographer’s distinctive views on dance and its role in society. Graham and members of the MGDC appeared on numerous “Dance Magazine” covers. As the Graham Company celebrates its centennial, a review of its coverage in the magazine reveals the scale of its influence—and how Graham’s works have resonated with dancers and audiences across generations. Learn more at the link in our bio. 🧡 All photos from the “DM” Archives. 📸: Joseph Arnold’s 1934 review of Graham; Graham on the October 1936 cover, photo by Ira D. This painting began in 2024, inspired by a photograph taken in 2023 during an interview and photo session with @rose.eichenbaum about my cancer and survivorship. Somewhere along the way I got stuck and stepped away from it. It sat quietly in my studio for quite some time. Recently I came back to it with fresh eyes and a new excitement to finish it. I was ready for the challenge. The pose, the expression, the attitude in this piece reflect where I am now. Learning to sit with the raw and honest reality of what my body looks like every day. I am still here and I look forward to continuing to live. Sometimes a painting just needs time. Just like we do.

Get excited—the 2025 Dance Teacher Awards are back! We’re here to recognize and celebrate dance educators who are making a mark in the field. ⭐ For 2025, our awards selection committee has chosen to honor: Lori Belilove, artistic director of the @isadoraduncandancefoundation, who trained as a dancer in Duncan’s direct lineage and is devoted to keeping Duncan’s legacy alive for today’s performers and audiences. Roger Montoya, whose New Mexico–based @movingartsespanola uses creative-arts education and hands-on mentorship opportunities to impact the lives of children throughout the region. Dianne Walker—aka “Aunt Dianne”—whose nurturing teaching style and unwavering dedication to tap dance’s history has inspired students for decades, and who has trained some of the best in the biz. Sylvia Waters, artistic director emerita of @aileyii, @alvinailey’s second company, who has guided countless dancers through the transition from student to young professional.
