There’s so much you can do to prepare for a shoot. It usually starts with one photo. Then a moodboard to set the tone. The clothes. Digging through wardrobes or borrowing. John using his rolodex of a mind to go through and strategize gear. Scouting the facets of the location that really stand out, have great light, have great texture. Once we get started with a shoot it’s also so often about what you don’t prepare for, the things that happen in the moment that can really be exciting.
.
Above all though it’s about a conversation. Are the elements speaking to us as photographers and to the model. It’s a dialog between John and I if we have to pivot strategy. It’s discussing with the model how their feeling, looking to them to see what their posing , body language and eyes are conveying.

If we’re going to have less light these dark winter days we might as well make our own. Often I’m up before the sun and up after the last rays have faded and nothing brings more cheer to me at these times than the glow of (faux) fireplace or taper candle. It adds an air of celebration to the mystery. And I in turn find myself excited for the holidays to come. Not for the commercial aspects but for the communal and traditional. Swedish foods, raclettes, toasts. The straw ornaments from my great great grandmother Hansen and Mum to be rediscovered. New ornaments and garlands to be plotted. Greens to be foraged. Cakes to be baked. Paper bags to be saved with bits of dried paper for wrappings .I just love it all. Gives one such a heartened sense of purpose in some small silly way.

I’m overwhelmed with love this weekend. My family and friends came together to throw us the cutest woodland creature baby shower! Kev’s parents drove all the way from Philly and they’re leaving with a car full of gifts so we can head to the White Mtns for a photo shoot the rest of the week 🤣 We feel pampered and so lucky. Thank you Mom and Sis for showing us so much love and thank you @rosemud for letting us pop up camp in your driveway! And since I forgot a card reader here are a few phone shots in the meantime.

For this shoot it was all about textures. Working within Rosie’s surroundings and highlighting the clothing’s unique properties. Going for a Toast like classic yet editorial vibe. Highlighting the quintessential New England landscape that has so much color and life even as it’s slowly fading. About elevated coziness and tucking into ones element.
