#OTD, we remember and honour Albertina Sisulu (1918-2011), a visionary leader, resilient activist, and dedicated champion in the fight against apartheid. This remarkable portrait, was created by Natalia Rosocha @rosii_art96, in response to a live brief in response to engagement with the history of South Africa and the struggle against apartheid delivered by @antiapartheidlegacy for @ldnmetarts @vc_ldnmetarts. Natalia's portrait is part of a thought-provoking tribute series to the immense contributions of women in the South African liberation struggle, and today, we remember 'Ma Sisulu'. An activist and community organiser, she trained as a nurse after completing her school studies, and her passion and enthusiasm for education never wavered. She strongly believed in the power of knowledge, famously standing by the principle "No liberation without education." In 1953, when the apartheid government introduced the oppressive Bantu Education Act, which restricted educational opportunities for Black children, Albertina Sisulu oversaw the using of their family home as a classroom until it was shut down by the regime. Later she joined forces with women across the country, against the closing of non-segregated schools and organising protests, including the historic march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in 1956 to protest pass laws. Their collective voice echoed through history, advocating for the education and liberation of future generations. We uphold her legacy, calling for access to empowering and equitable education for all. #AlbertinaSisulu #onthisday #NoLiberationWithoutEducation #AntiApartheidLegacy #Womenactivists #SouthAfrica #SouthAfricanHistory #Heritage #EducationalJustice #Activism #education #art #accesstoeducational #educationforall

Celebrate South African National Women’s Day by visiting our online exhibition titled ‘Strength in Unity’: https://antiapartheidlegacy.org.uk/resources/exhibitions/strength-in-unity/ or visit the link in our bio and access via the resources section on our website (navigate to 'resources' then the drop-down menu to 'exhibitions'). Black women under Apartheid experienced the triple oppression of race, class and gender. Many worked as domestic servants, leaving their own children in the care of elders in the segregated townships to travel to White-only suburbs to look after White children and homes. They received extremely low wages and slept in shed-like structures in their employers’ back gardens. Others worked long hours with low pay in factories. Strength in Unity is an online exhibition inspired by twelve South African Women by second-year Illustration and Animation Students at London Metropolitan University. 🖼️ Exhibition showcase image: Y.
