Is jersey swapping one of rugby’s best traditions?

At Pakuranga Rugby Club, the jerseys on the wall tell a bigger story.

Swapped from other clubs across the Auckland scene.
Kept intact.
Displayed with pride.

That says something about standards.

A jersey is never just a jersey.
It represents the people, the club, and the respect between teams.

Good to see this tradition still being looked after.

Should more clubs be preserving these old connections?

Not many clubs can say their colours helped shape a provincial identity. Roskill can.

Founded in 1945 as Mount Roskill Rugby Football Club, the club has evolved alongside the community it represents, today known as Puketāpapa.

Following an early merger with Hillsborough RFC, the club became Roskill Districts Rugby Football Club, carrying a wider district mandate while remaining grounded in its local roots.

Roskill Districts also holds a unique place in New Zealand rugby history. When South Auckland broke away from Auckland Rugby in 1955, later becoming Counties Manukau Rugby Union in 1956, Roskill loaned the fledgling union its red, black, and white strip. Those colours remain part of the Counties-Manukau identity to this day.

In 2016, Roskill Districts merged with Suburbs Rugby Football Club, with senior rugby integrating under the Suburbs banner. From that point on, the Roskill name has continued proudly through Mount Roskill Junior Rugby Club, ensuring junior rugby remains strong in the community.

From borrowed jerseys to lasting legacy. Roskill’s impact on the game runs deeper than most realise.
