I met her voice before I met her.

I was fresh out of college, in between jobs and questioning whether I really had what it took to be an artist. One rainy day, sitting in my little apartment, I heard Cassandra Wilson sing and stopped. Who is that?

I looked her up and discovered she was from Jackson, Mississippi. I remember thinking how incredible it would be to meet her one day.

Even better, to work with her.

And then I did.

But the greatest gift was that somewhere along the way, work became love.

Cassandra loved me. She loved my work. At a time when I was still learning to trust my own gifts, she saw them. She thought I was talented. She thought I was amazing. And when someone you admire that deeply turns around and believes in you, you carry that.

I photographed her. Designed for her. Wrote about her. She became the first face of Mississippi2. She held my son.

Today, going through all these photographs, I keep thinking about what a gift it is to have witnessed someone you loved while they were here—and to have been witnessed by them in return.

What a legacy.

Thank you for the music.
Thank you for the trust.
Thank you for seeing the artist in me before I fully knew how to see her myself.
Thank you for loving me.

I love you, Cassandra.

Rest beautifully. 💜

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, grandfathers, bonus dads, uncles, mentors, and father figures who show up with love, guidance, sacrifice, and presence.

A special Happy Father’s Day to Charles, father to Honor and Love. No matter how much life changes, I will always be grateful that we share these two incredible children.

Parenting is a lifelong journey, and together we have had the privilege of watching our children laugh, grow, learn, and become exactly who they are meant to be. There is no greater gift.

Today, I celebrate all of the men who love, nurture, protect, teach, encourage, and help raise the next generation. The world is better because of fathers and father figures who show up day after day, often in ways both big and small.

Happy Father’s Day to Charles and to all the dads out there. May you know how deeply you are loved and appreciated. 💜

This Veterans Day, I pause to honor Charles Brice and every Black man who has ever worn a uniform with quiet dignity.

These photos—of paint-stained hands, desert dust in Afghanistan, and the tender weight of our son Honor—tell the story of service that stretches across generations.
Honor’s name carries that legacy: three generations of men who served, endured, and came home to build again.

Service isn’t only about war; it’s about coming back to create, to nurture, to love. It’s about carrying the discipline of duty into fatherhood, community, and art.

Today, I lift gratitude for all those who’ve served, especially the Black men who bore two battles—the fight for country and the fight to be seen fully within it.

May we never forget the price of peace or the power of those who protect it.

Today my son, Honor, turns another year older, and I’ve been weeping all day — not from sadness, but from the sheer weight of love.

He is kind. He is brilliant. He is braver than I was at his age. This summer, he learned how to swim, his laughter carrying across the water like sunlight on ripples.

When he was born, so was I — a different me. A fiercer me. He arrived during the Ferguson uprising. His third birthday was marked by Charlottesville. Now, he stands just one year shy of Tamir Rice’s age when he was taken. That truth sits heavy in my chest.

And still, I choose hope.

He tells me he wants to be a scientist. And a president. I tell him yes, always yes — because his dreams deserve to breathe in a world that makes room for them.

Happy Birthday, my sweet boy. You are my greatest poem, my boldest prayer, my forever reason.

My daughter Love turns 8 this week.

Eight years of light, laughter, and fierce imagination. Now she tells me she wants to be an artist—like me. And I smile, knowing she already is. She paints her dreams, sings her truths, and dances like she knows the world is hers to shape.

But as her mama, I can’t ignore the weight of this world—the heaviness of raising a Black girl with a name like Love in a time like this. A time when freedom feels fragile and futures feel uncertain.

Still, she dreams. Boldly.

So I fight differently now. Softer, sometimes. Smarter, always. For her. For her art. For her 8-year-old heart that believes the world is still beautiful.

Happy Birthday, baby. The world needs your Love.
