WHY ATHLETE'S SPIRAL AFTER MISTAKES:
Reason #1

Your athlete isn't a perfectionist because they have high standards.

They're a perfectionist because they're afraid.

Here's the distinction that changes everything:

The excellence-driven athlete makes a mistake and thinks — what do I need to adjust?
The perfectionist athlete makes a mistake and thinks — what does this say about me?

Those look identical from the outside. But internally they are completely different experiences.

The perfectionist isn't striving for excellence. They are striving to avoid the feeling of failure. And because failure is always possible in competition — they are always operating from a position of fear.

One mistake doesn't mean a missed shot. It means — at a deep internal level — that they might not be as good as they thought.

The fix isn't lower standards. It's teaching them the difference between:

✓ A performance standard — I want to execute at my highest level
✗ A perfection standard — I cannot make mistakes

One is achievable. One is impossible. Only one allows an athlete to compete with freedom.

BOUNCING BACK after a mistake is difficult for many athletes, but it CAN be done. Here's how you can help!

Stop telling your athlete to shake it off.

That advice isn't just unhelpful — it's neurologically working against them.

When you tell the brain not to think about something — it immediately activates that exact thing. Psychologists call this the ironic process theory. The harder your athlete tries to forget the mistake — the louder it gets.

The solution isn't suppression. It's replacement.

The tool that makes replacement possible is called a reset ritual — a deliberate 3-second sequence that closes the loop on the mistake and returns attention to the next play.

It has three parts:

1️⃣ A deliberate exhale through the mouth — activates your body's calming system
2️⃣ A physical anchor — tap the chest, pull the jersey, snap next to the ear.
3️⃣ A focus word or phrase — What's Next. Reset. Be Excellent.

Three seconds. The same way every time. That's it.

Over time that sequence becomes a conditioned signal — the brain learns that performing the ritual means that moment is closed and we are moving forward.

This is not motivational advice. This is applied sports psychology. And every athlete can build this skill.

WHAT IS YOUR MISSION & WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO DO TO ACCOMPLISH IT?

I have held this for a couple of days b/c I wanted to get it right. I may fall short in that still, but here goes...

The man in this video, @nick.machine.lavery , came to speak to the Rossview High School 🏈 team this past week. His message was nothing short of COMPELLING.

I chose that last word carefully 🧐because a similar and more often utilized, yet VERY DIFFERENT word, INSPIRING, just didn't seem right.

INSPIRATION is much like MOTIVATION in that it is susceptible to our own personal whims. A fleeting FEELING directed by the EMOTION of the moment.

The word COMPEL means to force or to drive someone to take action. With that definition, and in the "Do whatever makes you FEEL good." world of today, many would take a negative view of my chosen verbiage. As an American 🇺🇸, I get that. After all, we have a long history of not taking kindly to being forced into anything... but I digress.😎

In my admittedly unsolicited and humble opinion, what we could all use a little bit more of is the DISCIPLINE to get up everyday and COMPEL ourselves and those around us to TAKE ACTION.

For these young athletes that means setting personal and team goals & then having the DISCIPLINE to stay true to the GRIND. Holding themselves and eachother accountable to performing the daily tasks they know will put them in the best position to realize their athletic goals.

What a phenomenal
lesson for these young men, delivered freely and without any expectation of return, by this American hero. 🇺🇸💪🏼😎

Make no mistake though, Nick's message is not only for these young athletes. I encourage you all to listen carefully and then make your own plan to get up everyday and STAY COMPELLED.

Losing, as bad as it sucks, is an inevitable part of sports. Athletes understand that at the end of every contest there will be an individual or a group of individuals who have managed to outperform another. In spite of this ever present potential for frustration, disappointment, and even embarrassment (b/c every athlete processes a loss differently) true competitors choose to show up week after week and take the risk. Over the last several months I have had the honor of working in a very unique capacity with a group of young men, TRUE COMPETITORS, who have managed to turn the tide of a struggling program. With the help of a largely volunteer force of dedicated coaches they have silenced countless naysayers, defied the odds, and quite literally secured themselves a place in the history books for their alma mater. They have reignited a sense of pride in their school and reenergized a student body that had become, by any definition, indifferent to their existence. They have made memories and forged relationships that will remain long after a truly remarkable season has been put to bed. So yes, losing is an inevitable part of sports, but it’s not the most important part.
