Round Hill Roastery | Margarissa Chelbesa 🇪🇹

30 seconds was good. 50 seconds was BETTER. 👀

I’ve been meaning to try Round Hill for ages. Those ridiculously vibrant bags have been catching my eye on coffee shop shelves for months!

And with blueberry, strawberry and Parma Violets on the tasting notes, this was always going to be right up my street.

🫐 Blueberry / Strawberry / Parma Violets

Straight out of the grinder, this smells INCREDIBLE. Super sweet, loads of berries and a real old-school sweet shop vibe.

And the Parma Violets? Love them or hate them, I absolutely get it, but personally I’m a fan. There’s a lovely floral character running through this coffee.

But the interesting bit was dialling it in.

I hit the textbook 1:2 ratio in 30 seconds. Nice coffee, job done? Not quite.

I pushed the extraction out to 45–50 seconds, keeping the same ratio, and the difference was massive.

More berry sweetness, more florals and a much more enjoyable cup.

Just another reminder that the numbers are a starting point, not the finish line. Taste your coffee!

Absolutely raced through this bag, and even Mrs Grounds for Review was a fan!

Would I recommend it? Absolutely. 🫐☕️

30 seconds isn’t a magic number. 👀☕️

This Ethiopian natural from Round Hill Roastery was good at 1:2 in 30 seconds.

But pushing the same ratio to 45–50 seconds? WAY more berry sweetness and florals. 🫐🌸

Proof that your taste buds matter more than the stopwatch.

Anyone else had a coffee that tasted better miles outside the usual recipe?

📍 SHOP SHOUTOUT | Faculty, Birmingham

In Birmingham for a congress, so had to check out a local spot!

Faculty came up, tucked away inside Piccadilly Arcade, and it turned out to be a very good shout.

The arcade itself is beautiful, full of independents, and was a really nice walk through the city first thing in the morning. One massive advantage of city centre coffee shops too, 7:30 opening. Ideal.

I knew I was onto something when there was already a small queue forming before they’d even opened.

The shop itself is bright and simple, even on a gloomy autumn morning. The menu is handwritten, the grinder labels are handwritten, and somehow that makes the whole place feel even more personal.

I went for “Peachy” as a flat white.

Really fruity, just the right amount of funk, and a very welcome change from the coffee I’d been drinking at the congress. The barista serving me was also super friendly and made a cracking cup.

There’s plenty going on beyond espresso too. A strong pour-over offering and a retail shelf that really shows you these guys know what they’re doing. Featuring the likes of Square Mile, Round Hill, DAK, Scenery, Coffee Collective and Datura.

Small shop, loads of character, seriously good coffee.

☕ Grounds for Review verdict: Well worth a visit if you’re in Birmingham.

Wowee, another day another lovely new guest roaster, and this time we’ve got @roundhillroastery from Somerset!! Roundhill were one of the first roasters I visited when I was first planning the concept of the cauldron, and they are such a lovely bunch, with some delish coffees. Their roasting style aims to bring out each coffees sweet, fruity and vibrant qualities. Their relationships with farmers span over a decade, and they’re committed to supporting these farmers well into the future 🍃

. Two of them are already on the bar, and the other two will be coming to our espresso menu very soon 💜
•
We’ve got:
Ruera AB Washed Kenya on batch brew- tasting juicy, and lightly spiced, just in time for those rainy autumn days.
Aquiares Mariana, an Anaerobic Natural from Costa Rica, on hand brew. Tasting like candy, poached pear and orange wine. Super sweet honey like mouthfeel, and beautifully complex with some lovely juiciness coming through as it cools.
•
La Isabel, an Anaerobic Washed from Honduras for espresso. This coffee is sweet, elegant, tasting of lemon curd, brioche and honey suckle.
Aquiares Esperanza, a Natural coffee from Costa Rica, tasting like pineapple, cherryade and caramel.
•
We’ve also got some great classics on retail, including their Circles espresso and their seasonal Unit Fourteen.
