In the best places (the places known for their beauty), the architecture tells you everything you need to know before a single word is spoken.

The rooflines of Alpine villages like Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Kitzbühel, with their steep pitches and generous overhangs, hint at the seriousness of winter in the Alps and the weight of the snow; their carved wooden balconies facing south, likewise, note that the sunlight is precious and not to be wasted.

The silver-shingled cottages of Nantucket, weathered by salt air into something close to driftwood, speak of proximity to the sea and of the practical limits of what paint will and will not survive.

The adobe walls of Santa Fe, rounded at their corners and the color of the earth they quite literally are, demonstrate that in a desert climate the land itself is the most intelligent building material available, absorbing the heat of the day and releasing it slowly through the cold night.

This is vernacular architecture. It is the built expression of place, climate, tradition, and available material. Every peculiarity of form, every regional detail that makes a building look like it could only exist where it does, represents a problem solved across generations by people who lived with the consequences of getting it wrong. Unlike much of the global architecture designed in the past 50 years, vernacular design reflects the unique beauty of its unique place - and somehow we’ve allowed this beauty to be challenged.

Vernacular traditions are remarkably durable and sustainable. They fit organically and beautifully within their landscapes.

The global homogenization of design, conversely, is creating a place-less world. The glass-and-steel box has become as prevalent in Riyadh as in Rotterdam and somehow viewed to be equally suitable for Phoenix and Oslo - which is to say it belongs nowhere at all. These globalist designs solve no local problem because they were designed without reference to any local condition. It has no intelligence of place.

If we are to recover or sustain the beauty of man’s mark on the world, we might look to the wisdom and humanity of the world’s unique vernacular forms.
