"BLACK LIVES MATTER. In the years since 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was murdered in his hoodie carrying Skittles, we have learned why this phrase is not simply a consequence of all lives mattering," writes Vincent W. Lloyd in the May 2023 issue of Sojourners. "The world systematically devalues Black life, turns Black life into death-bound life, and it is our task — as justice seekers and as Christians — to embrace Black resurrection."
.
"Politically that makes sense, but what does it mean theologically? Surely Christianity proclaims that all might be saved, independent of skin color. A half-century ago, James Cone and fellow Black theologians embraced this theological challenge head-on. They charged that the possibility of life after death for any individual is inextricably linked to the struggle against the death-dealing forces of white supremacy. How might we fill out this insight today, with Black Power slogans themselves finding new life and new form as activists embrace Black joy, Black excellence, Black rage, Black love, and Black dignity?"
.
"Yes, it is true that all human life in the world will end in death. But vulnerability to premature death changes the experience of living. It strips the life out of living, turning each moment into living death. The Black self — body and mind — must be always attuned to its surroundings, calculating risks, perceiving how it is being perceived, adjusting posture and words and the course of life to mitigate risk. Scientists are increasingly finding evidence of the physical harms this causes to Black bodies, literally putting strain on the heart."
.
"Vulnerability to premature death makes survival the necessary focus of Black life, but survival means barely living. To affirm the value of Black life requires the possibility for Black life beyond survival: life that is rich and creative, flourishing."
.

"From 1962 to 1966, the city of Athens used eminent domain under the Urban Renewal Act to force Linnentown residents out of their homes so that the University of Georgia could build three dormitories and a parking lot for their growing, mostly white, student body," writes Josina Guess. "The children of Linnentown are in their 70s and 80s now ... 'It was a warm place to live,' remembered [Christine Davis Johnson], who was 20 in 1963 when she and her newly widowed mother had to move. Johnson bore double grief that year from her father’s death and the loss of her childhood home."
.
"Sixty years later the grief of Linnentown residents is meeting some justice. Bolstered by the independent archival research of University of Georgia library staff member Joseph Carter, who approached descendants with his findings in 2019, Linnentown’s former residents used data to back up their painful memories. Carter and geographer Rachelle Berry worked with former residents to write a resolution presenting their grievances to Athens. In February 2021, Athens voted unanimously on the Linnentown resolution calling for remembrance and redress, and the city issued a public apology."
.
"'When I first read the Linnentown resolution, the words ‘white terrorism’ and ‘white supremacy’ just jumped off the page,' explained [Athens City Commissioner Russell Edwards], who is white ... But the more he learned about the specific ways Linnentown residents had been wronged, the more he realized the truth of those words. For example, the city did not improve roads or install sewers, thus degrading the neighborhood in the years leading up to its demolition. Nearby white neighborhoods were also bought out, but Black homeowners received 230 percent less for similar properties."
.
"As Linnentown was gaining local and national attention, some Athens church members saw an opportunity for a direct response ... 'I would love to see more people be able to move from the idea of individual atonement to communal atonement,' [said JoBeth Allen, secretary of Athens Reparations Action.]"

As @Harvard History Professor @TiyaMiles writes, “Despite our anxieties, we are not standing on the precipice at the end of America or the end of the world. Instead, we face change of a nature and magnitude that we may not fully perceive, but which history gives us a way to confront….So let us meet the change ahead by joining together in small acts of mutual humanity, embracing the strategy of gritty hope that Black culture and history make manifest.”

This powerful statement reveals the need for all Americans to embrace Black history not just during Black history month, but throughout our future of social, economic, and environmental change. By reading and studying the stories of how generations of Black Americans have lived throughout "unfathomable change," we can learn about psychological, emotional, and social strategies that help communities not only persist, but innovate when confronted by change.

Miles’ book All That She Carried recounts the history of generations of Black women who held onto hope and resilience over years of “tumultuous transformations.” Learn more about this National Book Award-winning book in Miles’ @NYTimes Op-Ed: link in bio.📚

Reading is foundational for me in learning how Black Americans have developed strategies for social innovation, even while facing systemic racism. I recommend reading these essential books on racial inequity and the potential for social change:

1. Caste by @IsabelWilkerson describes the divisions that underlie our society and how they have arisen from our history. With empathy and insight, Wilkerson explores real people’s stories to reveal how power and hierarchy impact people’s lives. Buy the book: link in bio.📚

2. The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander analyzes the history of the criminal justice system in America and sheds light on how racism is embedded within it. Exposing racial injustice within policy, policing, and mass incarceration, Alexander “struck the spark that would eventually light the fire of Black Lives Matter,” writes @IbramXKendi.
