Thank you to everyone who made the Def/Deaf art show possible! I am so happy to have finally connected with other Deaf artists, thanks to co-curator & participating artist Rowan O'Bryan. We are very proud to present works by Dax Lopez, Awet Moges, Kelly O'Brien & Kah Mendoza in honor of Deaf Awareness month. Much appreciation to @englishdarkside & @ra_pickup_media for their multi-media help, @rancho_tostado for serving delish hibiscus/elderberry Medicine Water, @reach_artlands for their support, & @ana_balka for her install help! Stone Levitation played nice & loud accompanied by the fabulous ASL interpreter Christopher Cardona. We missed having artists Kah & Dax here in person (but glad Dax could FaceTime with us!) I love having my Deaf & Hearing worlds collide in the very best way...true biz! 🤟🏼🤟🏽🤟🏾

Last night was our final night at DAR. We stayed up playing games and getting to know each other even more, some of us barely slept at all before heading to the airport. We grew closer than anyone expected and made lifelong friendships. A month felt like forever, but it flew by way too fast. So grateful for every moment and every person here. The Def/Deaf art show coming up is a labor of love close to my heart. September is Deaf Awareness month so I'm finally realizing my dream of showing fellow Deaf artists & celebrating Deaf culture. Co-curated with Rowan O'Bryan, we will OPEN with an art party on 12 Sept. Saturday 6-9 pm. Fab flyer art by Dax Lopez shows the hand signs for OPEN, titled “Opening the door to an entrance dedicated to Deaf art." Dax continues: "Stepping into the Deaf world opens a vibrant door to a rich culture, a unique language, and a deeply connected community." Live music of the deep space rock kind by Stone Levitation will be accompanied by an ASL interpreter. And Sarah Nocktonick will be set up with her beverage venture called Medicine Water. Thanks to @reach_artlands for their support; stay tuned for my workshop offering coming up! Side note: I attempted to draw the show title like the DEF JAM font since I identify as a Def/Deaf artist/poet. Obviously no AI used here! One of my fave quotes is "There's beauty in the imperfections." Hope to see you at 2nd Saturday Art Walk in downtown Joshua Tree!

Hopped on camera to record a few spontaneous thoughts about my Substack newsletter. I'm now back home from the @deafartistsresidency at the @andersoncntr in Red Wing, Minnesota! This was such a lovely month of writing, reading, wandering, chatting, reflecting, making new friends, seeing new places, and so much more. 😍📚 I'll post a few other residency throwbacks in coming days, but scroll through for some favorite photos from the month of May! Truly a perfect time to be in Minnesota with some fun company, and before the mosquitoes come out to play. I'm so grateful. I especially enjoyed getting to know my fellow residents, as well as several folks from the Minnesota Deaf community and the Anderson Center. What do the day-to-day activities look like for an arts residency? Check out these behind the scenes clips from our time at the Anderson Center! We are all working on different projects, often across very different forms of media. This month we’ve worked with clay, film and digital photographs, video, written words, doodles, paint, and more.
