First and foremost, I give all glory to God. None of this happens without Him. Through every setback, every closed door, every test of my faith. He kept me steady and kept me moving.
I want to say thank you to everybody who showed love, support, and congratulations. It truly means more than you know. This moment didn’t come easy. Early mornings. Late nights. Pain. Doubt. Sacrifice. Growth.
And I want to give a special thank you to my wife. Through the ups and downs, through the grind and the uncertainty, you’ve been there. I don’t take that lightly. I appreciate you more than words can explain.
But this is just the beginning. The journey has just started. I’ve got a long road ahead, and I’m locked in. I’m going to keep pushing, keep fighting through the aches, keep sharpening my game, and keep striving to be better every single day.
This is bigger than a moment. This is purpose.
Let’s keep building.

It’s been a week since we laid my grandfather to rest. He was a TRUE legend back home in East St. Louis. He changed the lives of many people, not just the athletes that played for him. You can see the impact from all who showed up, all the players that came on stage during his funeral. Boys he turned into men, into college athletes, NBA Players, College coaches, High School coaches and community leaders of their own.

My Grandfather was named “Illinois Coach of the Century” based on his record as the head coach of the East St. Louis Lincoln Sr.
High School Boys Basketball Team; he was the first coach in Illinois to set the following records: four straight tournament appearances, the first Class AA coach to win four Illinois State titles that included three consecutive titles (3-peats). He ranked first in Illinois State title game appearances, first in title game winning percentage, and fourth in the state final four appearances. His most notable Former basketball players are Retired NBA Player LaPhonso Ellis and Former NBA Player and College Coach Cuonzo Martin, and Former NBA Player Darius Miles.
Bennie J. Lewis Sr. was named Illinois Prep Basketball “Coach of the Century” by the Chicago Tribune in 2000. He was named one of the “100 Legends for 100 Years of Illinois High School Basketball” in 2007. He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. The Lincoln High School State Championship Teams of 1982, 1987, 1988, and 1989 were also inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

My father has seen me coach, my uncle has seen me coach. My grandfather never got the chance to. I never got to find out from his perspective if i was doing a great job of teaching, and leading the next generation as he did. Now he has sky box seats to every practice and game I will ever coach again. When i meet him in Gods Kingdom, I hope he tells me i did an amazing job.

RIP Papa 🧡🖤
