POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Celebrating International Women’s Month, I feel especially grateful to work with extraordinary women like singer, songwriter, and activist Roxiny.

Her mission to support children and women who have survived sexual and psychological abuse is deeply inspiring.

Here are a few portraits and behind-the-scenes moments from when I photographed and interviewed her while she was filming her music videos “Rituals” and “Stay.”

These images accompanied my nationally published article, “What a Beautiful Way to Scream,” for @palabra, where I explored the power of music as a healing tool for survivors.

“Music transformed my pain into a superpower,” said Roxiny, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.

Music can be a powerful path to healing. NYU music therapists Dr. Kenneth Aigen, director at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and Sandra Ramos-Watt explained that singing and using the body as a musical instrument can help survivors reconnect with themselves.

As Ramos-Watt notes: “It’s about being grounded and connected to your diaphragm, your breath, and your body. With trauma, people often disconnect or dissociate.”

Dr. Aigen adds that these practices can help bring a person back into their body, reconnecting them with their voice and their strength.

Honored to document stories where art becomes healing.
