Hozea Massiah, aka Big Apple, was born on March 10, 1971, and passed on May 6, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 54, and he was hip-hop culture.

Big Apple was one of the first people to believe in my current career path, and he was one of the first I told about Project T-Dot, my documentary project on Toronto’s hip-hop history, when we met in 2007.

He became part of a demanding and transformative apprenticeship I was fortunate to undergo; interning at his Swagg News publication, the Torstar Corporation (Toronto Star’s parent company), and learning from Director X, Davin Black, Randall “RT” Thorne, and others at 235 Films.

By 2009, I was juggling five internships simultaneously, willing to do whatever it took to build the foundation of my career, and I was willing and able to outwork most, if not all, of my peers and past versions of myself.

A visionary, trendsetter, and cultural bridge, Big Apple brought the hustle, bravado, fashion, nightlife, and authenticity of NYC’s hip-hop scene to Toronto and helped popularize trap music across Canada, among other milestones.

His brands, Big Apple’s World, Swagg News, Hip Hop Don’t Know Ü, and I’m Not A Rapper were global hip-hop fixtures during the early 2000s.

He taught me the power of audacity, marketing, social proof, and self-promotion. Long before Project T-Dot’s first exhibit became the largest ever installed on Toronto City Hall, Apple brought me there for a Swagg News shoot with Mayor David Miller; an audacious feat.

Drake, arguably the most popular musician in the world, mentions Big Apple on several records and shouted him out during his 2022 Canadian Northstars concert, further affirming Apple’s cultural legacy.

The last time I spoke to him in person was outside The Mod Club years ago; he was hyping up my work to everyone nearby. He consistently championed me.

He uplifted hip-hop's youth, and his early belief in my vision inspired the confidence that led to my framed portraits of Snoop Dogg, Nas, Clipse, and Drake being owned and endorsed by these legends.

I offer my deepest condolences to Hozea’s family, friends, and collaborators. His belief in me fuels my drive to reach greater heights.

#RIP 💔🕊️💔 My Brother, we started #Swagggirlicious Media as the sister company to #SwaggNews on May 9, 2009 and we been hitting the ground with media and marketing ever since!

From the Swagg Garage in Little Five Points, into the world of social media, we did that! You will be deeply missed in this life my brother. May the heavens rejoice as they welcome your soul and spirit home. Until we meet again, rest in divine peace. 🙏🏽
