POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This week, as part of a discussion in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on recognizing post-service suicide, Roy Peled, co-founder and Head of Government Relations and Community at ICAR Collective, spoke in the Knesset about a difficult issue that does not receive enough public attention - what happens to soldiers after they return from reserve duty.
Reports indicate a worrying rise in suicides and suicide attempts, especially since the beginning of the war, including cases of reserve soldiers who were no longer in active service.
And precisely there, after discharge, there is often no one who continues to check in, accompany them, or simply ask how they are doing.
This is a reality that must change.

Reservists or Released reservists? don’t go through this alone.

ICAR Collective’s conference took place in February, focusing on the key mental health challenges facing Israeli society during a prolonged and complex state of emergency. The conference included sessions on mental health, personal and national resilience, and coordination between organizations operating on the ground.

In one of the sessions, Itzik Saidian, founder of the “begova haenayim” organization, spoke about his perspective. According to him, post-trauma is not a fixed diagnostic category. It is a dynamic, often invisible, deeply personal experience - one that does not simply disappear.

Trauma can resurface at unexpected moments, and in many cases, it’s not something people “recover from,” but rather something they learn to manage over the course of their lives.

The core challenge, then, is to build a system that can provide immediate, accessible, and humane support, while also working toward coordination, standardization, and long-term structural development.

We tend to see Holocaust survivors as a symbol of resilience.
And rightfully so - they rebuilt their lives, started families, and created a future out of almost complete devastation.
They moved forward despite everything.
But this story, as we’ve come to tell it, is only part of the picture.
Behind the smiling faces, there was often a much more complex reality - one of pain that didn’t always have space.
In this article Gila Tolub, Co-founder and Executive Director at ICAR Collective, offers a different perspective on this familiar narrative.
She reminds us that functioning is not the same as healing - and that even when life goes on, it doesn’t mean the pain has disappeared.
They managed to build, create, and move forward - but at the same time carried a heavy emotional burden, one that was often passed on to the next generations.
After October 7th, we are no longer in the same place.
We also carry a responsibility - not only to move forward, but to pause, to notice, to listen, and to make space for what’s happening beneath the surface.
Because resilience and pain are not opposites.

Holocaust survivors showed the world what true human resilience looks like: they rebuilt their lives, raised families, and created a new reality out of almost total devastation. But as Gila Tolub, co-founder and executive director of ICAR Collective reminds us, this is only half the story.
Behind the ability to function and move forward, there was often unspoken trauma - fears that stayed in both body and mind, and a constant sense of threat that never fully disappeared. For many years, there were no words, no recognition, and no real tools to understand the depth of that pain.
Today, we understand that it’s possible to function and still be deeply wounded inside. Resilience and pain can coexist.
And that is the difference in our time: we have the ability to pause, to recognize, and to give trauma the space it deserves. Not just to keep going, but to truly heal.
Because real recovery is not only about rebuilding life - it’s about healing within it.

The recent F-15 incident highlights just how quickly reality can turn upside down - not only on the battlefield, but also psychologically. Pilots are trained to operate from a place of confidence and control, yet it is precisely the ability to let go of the belief that “it won’t happen to me” and rapidly shift into survival mode that proves decisive.
And this isn’t far from the experiences many of us face during an ongoing period of war. We, too, have been required, and often still are, to make a sharp mental shift.
As Prof. Eyal Fruchter explains, in moments like these, it’s not only the body that is tested, but the mind’s ability to stay sharp, adapt, and continue functioning even when the ground feels like it’s slipping away. Perhaps this is exactly where we can learn something from the mindset of pilots: not to cling too tightly to what once was, but to develop mental flexibility.
Acknowledging vulnerability and letting go of the illusion of total control can become a powerful tool. Because in the end, true resilience is not measured by the ability to avoid crises, but by the ability to transform within them.

This week we held the annual conference of ICAR Collective.
Two days of thinking, connection, and action - bringing together experts and thought leaders from academia, the social sector, government, and high-tech, with one clear goal: accelerate trauma healing in Israel through genuine collaborations.
Over the course of two days, we׳ve mapped Israel’s trauma-healing ecosystem, examined progress and challenges, and discussed the full continuum - from prevention to rehabilitation. From there, we moved to the next step: how to translate insights into action.
We spoke about innovation, research, technology, advanced treatments, and data-driven models, and concluded by presenting partnerships that accelerate healing through true collaborations.
Thank you to all our partners, organizations, clinicians, researchers, decision-makers, and participants who joined us.
This was not just another conference - it was a statement: the time has come to build a national healing system. Together.
