A surreal moment that wasn’t on my bingo card!

Earlier this year, I was honored to be selected as one of two recipients of the Sara Janz Memorial “Take Your Shot” Scholarship. At Stars for Sara, a September celebration of Sara’s life and legacy, I was introduced and recognized as a recipient, had the chance to thank the donors, and shared some of my work as a composer.

And, of course, I wasn’t expecting to be introduced by @robinrobertsgma

I’m incredibly grateful to @rozvaronabc7 and the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (@chi_natas ) for this scholarship and their support!

My dear friend and client of more than 20 years, Steven Fiore Chiappetti, passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning. He was 58. Without enough time. There aren’t words that feel adequate.

Steve brought me everywhere. Almost every place he worked, we worked together. A dynamic duo, we said! Nearly four years ago, he welcomed me into the Dreamweaver Hotels family at Hotel EMC2 and theWit - ushering Isabelli Partners back into hope after the long and unpredictable pandemic. Long before that, he invited me into his professional world and his friendship. He shaped my career, my confidence and my understanding of what hospitality really means.

Steve was a chef devoted to joy at the table. Passionate about his American-Italian heritage, he wanted to feed people, always through extraordinary food, boundless creativity and an open door. He never chased accolades (although they, too, came). He chased connection. That’s why people loved him. That’s why the media loved him. And that’s why he always showed up, whether it was a 5 a.m. TV call time or a last-minute request.

If you ever saw Steve on television, you know the move. The table bountifully set. The food styled perfectly. And Steve standing behind it, smiling and arms stretched wide, offering a hug. Knowing him felt like that.

He was a quiet trailblazer in Chicago dining. Beautiful food without pretense. Excellence without ego. He embraced media, storytelling and creativity with the same generosity he brought to everything else in his life.

But more than anything, Steve was my friend. He’s seen me through almost every chapter of my career and my adult life. He listened. He believed. He taught me to keep thinking bigger and to stay rooted in joy.

Steve showed me that when you focus on what you have to give, not what you have to prove, peace follows. We all have that spark. The real feast of life comes when you share it authentically.

I will miss him beyond words. Chicago will miss him. And everyone who crossed his path is better for it.

My love goes out to his dear family - whom he loved mightily - the Dreamweaver team and all those whose lives he touched.

Rest easy, dear friend.

❤️
