I met Johnny too soon. I’d been engaged. I’d had a plan. But I got dumped the day of the “wedding,” wedding in quotes because I knew what it was, knew the odds were 50/50 will/won’t happen and that the 50 that went “will” was mostly to prove I had faith, I could trust, had been trusting the whole last year I channeled the Dalai Lama, my face stubbornly radiating warmth and forgiveness against the inevitable pain of living as I relented, yes dear, no dress, no party, no white but the certificate. How many times I heard, I’m not the kind of guy to declare my love from a rooftop, and how that became okay with me. A lovely guy, but not the love or guy for me.

Three months later, I met Johnny. John. As soon as he entered the bar, I started to glow. I couldn’t help it. It wasn’t nerves but this unfurling, some internal force puppeteering me up from my stool, stretch, fling your arms out, where does the skin end—I was ten times my usual size. This is what it is to be in the presence of an open heart. Everyone who meets John feels this, and it’s annoying sometimes, to date someone so safe to fall in love with that everyone does, but my god, the benefits. The best of friends and his stunning work, he can write, he can act, wow, can he, and croon, he’ll finger pick my tender strings tenderly, and turns out he can even art direct?? and he shares it all with me. A month after we met, he said, come to DC, meet my family, watch me sing on a big stage, and a few songs in, there was one for me. Never in my life, I thought. Never in life does this happen. And then he did it two more times with two more songs, one of which is on this record he let me design that drops today. I can’t believe sometimes how beautiful he is, that there was ever a time I wasn’t this full of joy.

This EP rocks. His band is insane. It was an honor to accompany the tour where so many learned firsthand how good John is at what he does, this songwriting thing, the stage show, and it thrills me that today even more will. If you like it, share it! Buy and wear it and most importantly, tell Johnny how it hits you. He is Almost OK—Almost.

Love you, Johnny. Love you friends of Johnny. Love art. Love love.
