I had the privilege of hearing Rev. Jesse Jackson deliver his I Am Somebody speech and sharing breakfast with him.

What stayed with me most wasn't just what he said.

It was the community he built.

People showing up for one another. Looking after what others had started. Making sure the next person had something to carry forward.

It isn't just about what you build. It's about what you leave in the hands of others.

Happy heavenly 85th birthday, Rev. Jackson.

I am somebody. You are somebody. We are somebody.

And we have each other.

Happy heavenly birthday, Reverend.

Today is your first birthday without you here with us, and I feel your absence deeply.

To the world, you were Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., a champion for justice, a voice for those too often unheard, and a man who helped generations believe in their own possibility.

To me, you were also a father figure and a mentor.
Someone I looked up to, learned from, and loved. Your guidance helped shape the man I am, and being able to walk alongside you was one of the great privileges of my life.

You taught me that faith must be lived, that leadership carries a responsibility to others, and that we must keep showing up—even when the road is difficult. Those lessons remain with me. So does my gratitude for you.

Today, I celebrate your life while missing your presence.
There is so much I would still love to tell you. For today, I’ll simply say: thank you, Reverend. For guiding me and for being family.

A promise I will forever make to you: I will keep hope alive.

There is something dangerous happening to American democracy, and it does not always look like voter suppression.

Sometimes it looks like a spreadsheet.

Sometimes it looks like a computer algorithm.

Sometimes it looks like a letter telling you that your voter registration needs to be verified.

Sometimes it looks like nothing at all.

And that may be the most dangerous part.

Edward Ward has spent years working in communities, organizing voters, training young people, practicing restorative justice, and fighting for people whose voices are too often ignored. Today, as a Freedom Rider and Team Lead with the Transformative Justice Coalition and as the host of Save Your Vote's Jim Crow Reloaded short film series, in a guest editorial at GregPalast.com, Ed contemplates a question that is both simple and deeply uncomfortable;

How do you protect a right that people assume they already have?

Thank you to my little brother Yusef Jackson, President and CEO of Rainbow PUSH Coalition and son of my late mentor Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., for the birthday love as I celebrate 72 years. The bond between our families means a great deal to me.

🗳️ Today, we were proud to join the Jesse Jackson Sr. Young Voter Empowerment Coalition headed by Dr. Jo Ann Roberts at Rainbow PUSH for Teen Voter Registration Day!

It was wonderful to stand alongside Senator Robert Peters, Cook County Commissioner Tara Stamps, the League of Women Voters, Chicago Votes and all the stakeholders committed to ensuring our young people are registered, informed, and ready to make their voices heard.

I was especially pleased to welcome students from schools across Illinois who joined us for an educational field trip focused on civic participation and the importance of being engaged in our democracy.

Empowering the next generation starts by giving young people the tools and opportunities to participate. Their voices matter, and our democracy is stronger when they use them! 🇺🇸

Next week on September 10th, I am proud to celebrate National Teen Voter Registration Day and the Jesse L. Jackson Youth Voter Registration & Empowerment Day! 🗳️ Empowering young people to register, participate, and make their voices heard strengthens our democracy and builds the next generation of civic leaders. HB 4339 is now the law, let’s put it into action!

Leading up to the 2024 election, 4.7 million Americans were wiped off the voter rolls, a daylight robbery of democracy.

To prevent another electoral crime wave sabotaging the midterms, we're launching the counterattack.

Over a hundred thousand people lost their right to vote in Florida. That's why Florida turned red. It's not that the voters turned red, the voter rolls turned red. That’s why we’re launching an emergency operation put together by the A-Team in voting rights: NAACP Atlanta, Rainbow PUSH, Black Voters Matter, Transformative Justice Coalition, top voting rights lawyers, and the Latino vote group SVREP. Learn how they can take your vote — and what you can do about it at: SaveYourVote.org

REPOST @drmayaangelou - 📚 August is National Back-to-School Month! As classrooms begin to fill once again, we're reminded that education is more than preparing for a new school year; it's a lifelong journey of curiosity, growth, and discovery.

For Dr. Maya Angelou, books were more than stories; they were windows to new worlds, sources of comfort, and pathways to understanding herself and others. She believed deeply in the transformative power of reading and the importance of nurturing young minds through knowledge and imagination.

"When you learn, teach. When you get, give." — Dr. Maya Angelou

This month, let's celebrate the educators who inspire, the students who dream, and the families who encourage a love of learning. Whether you're heading back to school, picking up a new book, or donating one to a young reader, every step toward literacy helps shape a brighter future.

📖 August Reading Challenge: Read one book that broadens your perspective and share it with someone else.

💛 What book has taught you one of life's greatest lessons?
