@rponyx was one of the great drummers, composers, and bandleaders of his generation. He played with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Michael Brecker, Betty Carter, Branford Marsalis, David Murray, Roy Hargrove, and many others. He was also a dedicated educator at Berklee and a mentor to a whole generation of musicians, carrying forward the tradition of developing young players that he learned from Art Blakey.

Ralph did a lot to support the jazz community as well, both through his own bands and through his teaching, giving younger musicians opportunities to play, record, and develop their voices. There really haven’t been many others like him in that regard.

Back in August at @smallslive my group performed the title track from his 2001 album The Art of War, which takes its title from Sun Tzu’s classic book on military strategy. The text itself is truly intense and unforgiving, however the dense teachings on preparation, awareness, timing, adaptability, accountability and the complexities to understanding circumstances around you are all fully applicable to music playing and many other important aspects of life.

I hope you enjoy this extended solo clip on one of Ralph’s most celebrated and played tunes. Thanks to one of Ralph’s students, great friend of my mine and amazing drummer @gusten_rudolph for sharing Ralph’s personal charts with me. Thanks to Marvin‘s mentor and teacher David Coleman for caring so much about what we were doing that night and recording this and many other video clips throughout the night. Thanks to the amazing musicians below for playing their 🍑s off as always, to @spikewilner for having us and to the great audience who engaged with us all night.

Revisiting the music I was smitten by back in the early 1980s when other musicians I knew were into punk rock. I sat in a room, practicing all of these melodies (which are difficult for guitar, because they were created on/for horns and piano) until I was falling asleep in front of my music stand.

Glad I did it back then. It definitely got “into me” some way - and although I’m not a jazz player per se, I can hear its influence in some of my phrasing, etc. (I managed to sneak one such riff into my outro solo on “Shoot Out The Stars” from my album The Concrete Jangle… check it out at 3:17 😜 https://youtu.be/2jqS80X4TNo )

Transcribed a few bars of pure drum set mastery by my former mentor the late Ralph Peterson @rponyx
This is the best way to absorb vocabulary and sound.
