Last Thursday the amazing jeweller Richard Talman “RTFJ” let me watch and video him placing some of Mick’s ashes in my ring. It was emotional at times but lovely to watch 🩵 Richard is the jeweller who is on The Repair shop. He is the most talented, very professional, kind man. I felt honoured to be able watch what him. Mick will always be with me 🩵 Thank you Richard. 😊

Silver is usually where laser welders start to struggle… not this time.

Richard Talman puts the White Onyx to the test, moving from 18ct gold straight onto silver, and the results are instantly impressive. Clean flow, strong bonding, and control that behaves more like welding platinum.

Even more surprising, this was done on a polished piece of silver, something that would normally cause the laser to bounce and make welding far more difficult. No black pen, no workaround, just a clean bond at around 70 percent power.

When a compact laser handles silver this confidently, it says a lot about what is happening under the hood.

The finishing trick most jewellers haven’t tried.

After setting a stone, the finish on the claws often needs refining. Traditionally, that means carefully working in with polishing tools and hoping you can reach the right spots without disturbing the setting.

Richard Talman shows a smarter way.

With the White Onyx laser welder, you have far more control over the spot size than on less powerful machines. By widening the spot and placing it right over the claw tips, the laser spreads its power across a larger area, gently smoothing the surface.

The result is a bright, mirror-like finish on the claws, without awkward polishing angles or getting too close to the stone with traditional tools.

Richard Talman has a brilliant way of explaining laser spot size.

Think of it like the beam on a torch.

When the beam is tightly focused, the light is incredibly intense in one small spot. Turn the lens and the beam spreads out, covering a wider area with less intensity.

Your laser works in much the same way.

By increasing the spot size, the energy spreads across a broader surface. Instead of penetrating deeply into the metal, it gently melts the top layer. Perfect for smoothing and brightening claws after setting.

Dial it in just right, and those claw tips start looking beautifully glossy and ready for the next step. ✨
