In honor of Jeff Cannonball. Free tapes / LPs at Bayonne Record Fair. Please read. I (Max) first met Jeff in 2000 when I booked an outdoor hardcore show and skateboard demo in the town over from where we both grew up. I can’t do the math right now but I was maybe 17 and he was probably 13 at the time. As he tells it on his episode of @turnedoutapunk which I just relistened to he got a flyer for it at a local skate shop and went because of that. This turned out to be Jeff’s first time seeing punk / HC bands and he fell in love with it from there. Sorry / not sorry Jeff. At the time I was one of his old heads which is absolutely comical now to think about but as we both grew older it was easy to see Jeff was so much cooler than I could ever be. He played in HC bands from a young age and then pursued another passion: independent wrestling. Inside the ring he was psychotic being attacked with lightbulbs, barbed wire, glass, nails and so on. Outside the ring anyone who knew him could attest to his kindness and sense of humor. He loved his family and he lived the way a true artist should: pursuing his passions for the love of them. He rightfully earned respect and admiration with both music and wrestling. I recently unearthed a small amount of cassette tapes by one of Jeff’s bands Altered Boys which I’ve had about 15 years from when I did a small label & distro. When I reached out to his best friend @rtfrecords about what he thought I should do with them he promptly said to give them out to younger kids at the record fair because it’s what Jeff would have wanted. I then hit up my bud @ancientartifax who was also friends with Jeff about seeing how he could contribute. He instantly got on board as well by donating ten classic hardcore LPs to be given out for free to the first younger folks that come up to his table at the Bayonne Record Fair. So, if you’re under 21 and have any interest in punk / HC come see Brian @ancientartifax and you can get a free tape / LP while supplies last in honor of Jeff Cannonball. Rest In Power and ALS can suck it.

MANIK from New Jersey. At their core, they tear forward with a D-beat-driven crust / Scandinavian hardcore attack, but without leaning too heavily on that characteristically rusted-out texture. Instead, you can hear elements of contemporary USHC like GAG and SPY filtering in naturally, with the regional context adding its own distinct feel. The result is something that doesn’t quite fit any familiar mold and feels genuinely unique. I honestly didn’t know you could put these elements together like this — it completely floored me.
