В Дохе готовится к открытию первая квадриеннале Rubaiya Qatar — об искусстве, воде и морском наследии

В конце ноября в Дохе стартует первый выпуск международной выставки современного искусства Rubaiya Qatar («Рубайя Катар»), которая будет проходить раз в четыре года. Проект призван показать современным художникам и мыслителям, что наследие Катара — море, торговые пути, ремёсла, вера, фольклор — может служить живым материалом для их практик.

Центральная выставка «Неукротимые воды» откроется в арт-пространстве ALRIWAQ («Аль-Ривак»). Название отсылает к книге историка Сунила Амрита о взаимосвязи воды и человечества и предлагает посмотреть на воду как на своевольную силу, способную соединять берега и культуры, размывать границы, диктовать ритм торговли, миграционных процессов и конфликтов. В экспозицию войдут керамика с затонувшего у побережья Катара в X веке судна, видео, скульптура, живопись, инсталляции, кулинарные эксперименты, перформансы, арт-объекты, созданные с использованием нейросетей.

من الصحراء العطشى إلى البحر المهدّد... ماذا تقول لنا بعض الأعمال الفنية المشاركة في «رباعية قطر» عن مستقبل الماء؟

نخيل ينحني تحت سماء حمراء في لوحة الكويتية دلال العبيدي، وإنسان يحتضن جاموساً وسط الماء في فيديو العراقي علي يحيى، وشخصية أسطوري في الموروث الخليجي يستحضرها الكويتي جاسم الصانع، وأسماك تملأ مشهداً تركيبياً للكندية ناديا بيليريك.

مشاهد تتباعد في أشكالها ووسائطها الفنية، لكنها تلتقي عند سؤال واحد: كيف تغيّرت علاقتنا بالطبيعة التي منحتنا الحياة؟

من هذا السؤال تنطلق الدورة الأولى من «رباعية قطر»، المهرجان الدولي الجديد للفنون البصرية الذي تنظّمه «متاحف قطر»، بمشاركة أكثر من 120 فناناً من أكثر من 45 دولة، وما يزيد على 45 تكليفاً فنياً جديداً.

تحتل المياه قلب هذه الدورة، بما تحمله من تاريخ التجارة والهجرات والتبادل الثقافي، وصولاً إلى الجفاف واستنزاف الموارد والتهديدات البيئية.

وتتوزّع الأعمال على ثلاثة معارض رئيسية: «مياه جموح»، و«حين ننساب معاً»، و«بحر مسجور»، الذي يعود إلى علاقة سكان الخليج بالبحر، من الموروث الشعبي والمعتقدات إلى التحولات البيئية التي تهدّد عالمه.

في «رباعية قطر»، يصبح الماء مدخلاً لقراءة تاريخ الإنسان، والتأمل في مستقبل الحياة على الأرض.

We’re delighted to share that our represented artist Dalal Al-Obaidi has been selected for the inaugural edition of Rubaiya Qatar, Qatar Museums’ new contemporary art quadrennial.

Her work will be shown in “Seething Sea”, curated by Wadha Al-Aqeedi, opening 22 November 2026 in Doha, as announced by @artreview.

In Dubai, Dalal’s solo exhibition “Frogs, Jazz & Blisters” is on view at Taymour Grahne Projects until 11 November. Warehouse 31a, Lane 4, Alserkal Avenue.

Taymour Grahne Projects artist Dalal Al-Obaidi has been selected to participate in Rubaiya Qatar, the inaugural edition of Qatar Museums’ international visual arts quadrennial, organized under ALRIWAQ Arts + Architecture.

Curated by Wadha Al-Aqeedi with Assistant Curator Loulwah Kutbi, “Seething Sea” brings together more than fifty artists across three generations from every shore of the Gulf, exploring the region’s deep-rooted relationship with the sea through faith, folklore, ritual, and craft.

Al-Obaidi will present work at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, alongside artists including Khalifa Al-Qattan, Dia Azzawi, and Monira Al Qadiri.

Rubaiya Qatar Announces Artists for Inaugural Edition - The first edition of Rubaiya Qatar, a new quadrennial in Doha, opens next month and will host more than 120 artists from around the world, including Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Nepal, Palestine, the Philippines, Sudan, and Thailand. This inaugural quadrennial is focused on global ecology, water, and maritime heritage and comprises three exhibitions and public installations, as well as a display of historic artifacts from the tenth-century Cirebon shipwreck, which reveal ancient cultural and commercial exchange routes.

The main exhibition, titled “Unruly Water,” takes place from November 21, 2026 to April 30, 2027, and is curated by Tom Eccles, executive director of the Center for Curatorial Studies and the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College; Ruba Katrib, chief curator and director of curatorial affairs at MoMA PS1; Mark Rappolt, editor in chief of ArtReview and ArtReview Asia; and Shabbir Husain Mustafa, chief curator at the Singapore Art Museum. The other two exhibitions, “Our Common Currents” and “Seething Sea” will open on November 22 and also run until April 30, 2027.

I am delighted to share details of my participation in Qatar Museum’s contemporary art quadrennial Rubaiya Qatar and its inaugural exhibition 𝘜𝘯𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 showcasing artists from a region informed by both the ancient Maritime Silk Road and Qatar’s present demographics.

Thank you to Tom Eccles, Ruba Katrib, Mark Rappolt, and Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, and the @rubaiyaqatar team for the reflective and considered curatorial direction.
