"See here how everything lead up to this day."

Black Peter is sung from a deathbed. A man is given one more day, and from inside it he turns to his friends: "see here..."

Hunter wrote the song as "a jumpy little tune." Garcia slowed it to "a mournful tempo" - and only then did Hunter write the bridge this line lives in.

Everything. The turns you called right, the turns you called wrong. At the end the verdicts fall away, and only the seeing is left - the whole road, leading here.

One way to hear it: the last day and the first day are the same day. The sacred was never scheduled.

Commandment XI of XIII. Two remain.

"Listen to the thunder shouting 'I Am.'" 🌹

Barlow asks shall we call it by a name - then stops speaking and stands inside the rain.

Not because the name is missing. Because it is already falling on him.

Landing on the earth. Rumbling overhead. Pronouncing itself, without pause, since before there was anyone to listen.

The world is not full of things. The world is full of signatures.

And the thunder says the name plainly: I am, I Am, I Am, I Am.

It cannot be found. It can only be heard.

Commandment X of XIII. Set Two continues.

"If you get confused, listen to the music play." 🌹

Hunter sits this lyric at the end of a verse about a bell that may only ring once, and a watch kept over you day and night.

When you get lost, he does not send you to the bell. He sends you to the music - the one that has never stopped.

Notice what he does not say. Not look. Not see. When you are confused, sight has already failed you. But you can still hear.

Hearing does not require clarity. The music has been playing under the thinking the whole time.

Commandment IX of XIII. Set Two continues.

What has the music been trying to say to you all along? 👇

"Keep on dancing." 🌹

The verse this lyric sits inside is stranger than it looks:

No one's noticed, but the band's all packed and gone. Was it ever here at all? But they keep on dancing.

The band leaves. The dancers keep dancing.

Earlier in the same song, Barlow writes it plain:

the music plays the band.

The musicians are the instrument. The music was always playing them. There is nowhere it is not.

The commandment is not dance while things are good. It is let it dance you.

Commandment VIII of XIII. Set Two begins here.

Where is the music playing you right now? 👇

"Don't give it up, got an empty cup, only love can fill."

The one giving this instruction, in the song, is blind.

Comes a time when the blind man takes your hand, says: don't you see?

Hunter placed the deepest sight in the hands of the one whose eyes gave him nothing.

The lyric sits above one of the hardest verses in Hunter's writing - the one about the day that may come when you can't feel at all.

This is a lyric for the numb.

If you are reading this and something in you has been empty for a long time - the blind man is speaking to you.

Don't throw the cup away.

You are not required to fill it.

You are only required to stay.

"Light the song with sense and color." 🌹

Hunter did not write this as advice to light your own life.

He wrote it in the voice of the Storyteller - whose job, he tells us plainly, is to shed light, not to master.

Facing mysteries dark and vast, the Storyteller asks Inspiration for just enough sense to be followed, just enough color to be alive.

More than this, I will not ask.
It is the prayer of a conduit. And a quiet commandment for anyone who makes anything: light the song.

Do not aim it at anyone. Let it do the reaching.

"Without love in the dream, it will never come true." 🌹

This is the last line of Help on the Way - the sentence the whole song walks toward.

Hunter doesn't promise anything. He names a condition.

Most people only learn this one the hard way. Something arrives wearing the dream's clothes - the world accepts it, only you know.

"You are the eyes of the world." 🌹

It tells you something quietly impossible - and waits for you to notice.

Hunter called the song quite mystical and left it there.

Garcia said he didn't remember writing it. Some songs are designed to stay open.

Swipe through for Commandment IV of XIII.

Read the lyric once. Then once more, slowly. 🌹
