The longest night of the year has passed and today marks the Winter Solstice.

As darkness falls and we light up the Garden for one last evening before we close for Christmas, we are feeling reflective, as we always do on this special day.

We’re taking time out to reflect on the year that has passed in Dalston Curve Garden, in Hackney and in the world we all live in. It’s been a very challenging year, but we are giving thanks for the beauty of the plants and nature that bring us so much joy all year round and for the wonderful community that we are lucky to be part of. Our team of staff and volunteers, led by the brilliant @deanpyng have worked so hard, nurturing the plants and in turn the birds and creatures they support. And we are so grateful for all of the hard work, dedication and kindness shown by our cafe staff, our art and education freelancers and volunteers who work hard every day to welcome so many people to the Garden - children with families, children with their schools, older people in our weekly gatherings, young people, community groups and visitors from far and wide.

We feel immensely proud to live and work in Dalston and Hackney and to be surrounded by the strength, compassion and dedication of all of the amazing organisations, individuals and campaigns who we’ve celebrated throughout December in our annual #hackneyadvent calendar. You can still see them all in our ‘hackneyadvent25’’ stories highlight above.

It may be dark outside now, but the snowdrops and green shoots are already emerging throughout the Garden, reminding us that the days will be longer now, the light is returning and Spring will come around soon, as it does each year.

We close today at 8pm and will reopen on Friday 2 January.

Many thanks to all of you who have supported the Garden this year, in so many ways - we are always immensely grateful. We wish you all a joyful and peaceful Christmas time and look forward to welcoming you all back to Dalston Eastern Curve Garden in 2026.

This year’s Dalston Pumpkin Lantern Festival has been phenomenal! 1,000 lovingly crafted lanterns were carved over the weekend of 25 & 26 of October by children, young people and adults and with community groups this week. All this week the pumpkins have been lit up throughout the Garden on our Light Nights, and we’ve seen unprecedented queues of excited people snaking round the block, eager to come in to see the spectacle!

Dalston Pumpkin Lantern Festival would not be possible without the hard work, patience and dedication of our amazing team of volunteers and staff who together have kept visitors of all ages safe, happy and entertained.

They have truly brought magic to Dalston this Halloween!

So today we are sharing some photos of just some of this brilliant team in action. We hope you will join us in giving them all a massive cheer and pat on the back! If you were one of the many thousands of visitors that have enjoyed the pumpkin lanterns, we encourage you to take a moment to leave some lovely comments on here, to thank this team for working so hard.

If you would like to be part of our amazing team of volunteers for Dalston Pumpkin Lantern Festival 2026, please email info@dalstongarden.org and we will be in touch with you soon.

We are taking part in @opencity_uk ‘s Open House Festival on Saturday 20 September 2025, offering a sneak preview of our new indoor space, while it is still in its development stage. This multi-use space will house our new cafe, a warm place for our social support groups to gather and a location for year-round events and nature-inspired creative workshops.

The new space is located in the ‘V22’ building on Ashwin Street, which is adjacent to the Garden and will be accessed directly from the Garden. This Spring we campaigned with V22’s resident artists and our neighbours @bootstrapcharity & @cafeotodalston to support @v22studios to buy the building, to ensure it continues as artists’ studios.

For Open House, Marie Murray and Brian Cumming, who were part of the team who set up the Garden and continue to run it as a social enterprise, will talk about the past, present and future of Dalston Curve Garden. They will also tell the story of the Ashwin Street building from Victorian times to its new incarnation as the ‘Ashwin Art Centre’ and describe the ongoing joint community campaign to keep green space, community, culture and creativity at the heart of Dalston. ‘From Grey to Green’, an exhibition celebrating 15 years of Dalston Eastern Curve Garden will also be on display in the new space.

The Open House talks and Q&A take place at 1pm-2pm and 3.30pm-4.30pm. They are free, but need to be booked in advance. Places have been booked up for a while, but we have just added a number of additional tickets for both talks. They are available from the Open House website, link in our bio.

We will be hosting more ‘sneak peak’ events in the next few weeks, ahead of our official opening later this year, so if you can’t make it along tomorrow, don’t worry.

We are very grateful to the architects from ‘Pocket Works’ collective who have been working with us to design our new space and install our ‘From Grey to Green’ exhibition.

And last but definitely not least, thanks to our brilliant team of staff, freelancers and volunteers who have worked so hard on our new space and exhibition and to @stokeyprintshop for their patience.
