A lovely London tea with @catfreem , brilliant Head of Development at @rubyrockpictures . Usually, Catherine and I are zoom buddies. What’s better than catching up - in person - on the TV development of #Vampirates? Catching up on it with scones, jam and clotted cream!!!

Could I love this any more?! I could not. Thanks so much @wickedwomenauthor for sharing the Lorcan/VAMPIRATES love. We need to set up a zoom with your students soon. And I wouldn’t say no to a Team Lorcan shirt either (though, as you know, I’m sometimes Team Johnny!) #vampirates #lorcanfurey

This has been an exceptionally fun writing week.

I’m working on Book 4 (as yet untitled) in the Pirate 🏴‍☠️ Academy series. Although you can absolutely read PA independently of VAMPIRATES, they are of course set in the same oceanic universe and I’m enjoying the challenge and opportunities of weaving the two together.

If you’ve read Book 3: Sword Echoes already, you’ll know that a very major VAMPIRATES character appears in this book.* Don’t scroll down if you don’t want to know who!

This character returns in Book 4. PLUS, I’m bringing two more favourite VAMPIRATES characters into the adventure. I won’t plot spoil but what I will say is that they become a key part of Jacoby’s trajectory in the new story and this involves him being out at sea on a truly iconic pirate ship. ⛵️

I’m always a little nervous when I “pick up” a character from VAMPIRATES who I know means so much to longtime readers. But, this week, I had the same feeling that I had when I was writing the Crossing Stories for the @foxandinkbooks editions of VAMPS. Writing about these characters I have known so long truly feels like reuniting with dear old friends.

I hope you’ll enjoy the cross-over too in due course.

Meantime, enjoy the weekend. And check out my fab new t-shirt, courtesy of @jadelouiseauthor and @shadowkissedbooks. Picked it up at the @celestialfantasyevents book signing ✍️ today.

* Its Cheng Li.

WELL, THIS IS ONE WAY TO ‘COME OUT’ @variety 👽

Disclosure is such a personal journey and one which, like a flower sensing what it will become when a seed underground, unfurls within its own place and season.

During the depths of the pandemic, whilst living alone and away from my support network, I was diagnosed AuDHD, and plunged into an unforgiving and melancholic mist which I feel is now finally lifting.

There’s a strange, sad laugh that erupts from within, when the person diagnosing you openly discloses that they don’t believe women can have ADHD; and that if you run your own company you can’t possible be autistic (Silicon Valley being the mothership for allistics and neurotypicals).

People in the Industry advised not to ‘come out’, otherwise I would never be hired as an actress again. Of course, I took this literally.

Little by little my sense of self and self-worth began to erode. It never ceases to amaze me how fear fuels most of our decisions and reactions in this world.

I retreated into my cocoon. Threw myself completely into supporting women and non-binary filmmakers through Primetime. It was a passion turned hyperfixation which forced me to keep moving but also to not look at my own life, career or self.

Slowly, I began reaching out to people I trusted, and was quickly invited to sit on @bafta’s Disability Advisory group, so I could continue the advocacy work for ND communities behind the scenes.

With time I grew in confidence, opening up about my strengths & sensitivities, and I realised just how many people breathed a kindred sigh of relief when I was honest with them about my journey - as that seemed to give them permission to mirror their own truth back to me.

Now, here we are, 5 years after joining the waitlist for a diagnosis, with the announcement of ‘The Birth Of A Mall Goth’ in Variety celebrating autistic and neurodivergent talent both onscreen & behind the camera, and it felt important to share my personal reasons why this film, and others where lived experience is nuanced and celebrated, will always be the ones I will spend my career advocating for, bringing to life and being a part of, both in front of and behind the camera.
