Shortly afterward, the man ran westbound from the campus toward the Trader Joe’s parking lot with an officer pursuing him on foot. The officer eventually caught up to the man and detained him.

Graffiti Towers still on the Rise

Rising above the Los Angeles skyline, the abandoned high-rise structures known as the Graffiti Towers have become one of the most recognizable symbols of urban art culture in Southern California. Covered from top to bottom in colorful murals, throw-ups, tags, and large-scale pieces, the towers transformed from unfinished construction projects into one of the largest graffiti-covered structures in the United States.

The towers were originally part of a luxury development project called Oceanwide Plaza, located across from Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) in Downtown Los Angeles. Construction began in 2015 and was intended to include luxury condominiums, a hotel, retail spaces, and upscale amenities.

However, financial problems halted construction in 2019. The massive structures were left unfinished, sitting vacant in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. For years, the empty concrete skeletons stood as a symbol of stalled development and economic uncertainty.

Why Is There Graffiti All Over Them?

In early 2024, graffiti writers began finding ways into the abandoned buildings. Because the towers were largely unsecured and stood dozens of stories above the city, they quickly became an irresistible target for adventurous artists and graffiti crews.
