I am a longtime fan of the trombone mastery of Dick Griffin. Primarily his leader albums, like A Dream For Rahsaan, and Eighth Wonder, but also a long list of inspired supporting roles. He's played with Sun Ra since 1959. Just pause: 1959. Also George Benson, McCoy Tyner, Rahsaan Kirk, Dollar Brand, Harry Belafonte....

I had the privilege to see him and his large band, as well as his fantastic paintings in a loft space near Penn Station today. I wasn't around in the 70s when people had loft concerts, but I've read a lot about them. This was as close to that experience as I could imagine.

I learned today that his early career included being in a Doo Wop group, and singing and playing in a piano bar four nights a week. He sat at the piano today and sang us an amazing Sun Ra song.

Griffin is known for his technique of circular phonics, combining multiphonics with circular breathing. It was transcendent to see and hear this in person.

I walked in to watch the dress rehearsal and the banter back-and-forth between Dick and this amazing 10 piece band. There was solid art direction from Griffin, but amazing solos from many as well. As I receive the list of band members, I will tag them here. The paintings will be up for a while. Go to Dicks page for details
