🪑 Where contemporary meets street dance!

Some documentation of process for my recent set “BENCHMARK” presented for STUDIO 6 @thestudionorthto. I find it thrilling to see the thoughts / decision-making / influences of choreographers… so here I am sharing my own!

Kept it digestible in the graphics, but fleshed out more ideas in the captions if you wanna read and converse ➡️

I’ve been training in punking/whacking/waacking for 8 years now, but only recently have had the chance to develop and work in contemporary dance lately… and I’m just obsessed.

I also feel like dancers trained in these spaces have such great malleability and creativity when it comes to following prompts/concepts for freestyle! Not to mention the openness to exchange and connection with one another… I felt like it’d be such a good mesh.

Honestly, I was doing the MOST with this initial ideation. I soon realized that approaching the piece like this meant that I’d have to establish these two worlds as opposing one another — which would’ve brought an air of… adversity? Competition? Negativity?

And I wouldn’t want that to be the takeaway. So I’d then have to resolve the conflict! And with a max runtime of 3 minutes, that just seemed infeasible. 🧍‍♂️

So, when mapping out the piece, I decided to focus on a sense of playfulness and curiosity rather than rigid boundaries. (And, after watching us all dance together at the first rehearsal, it was clear that my instincts were correct! We are all just lovers of dance.)

(I honestly asked so many people, but a few were interested but unavailable, a few were doing too many other projects at the time, and some I didn’t even get around to asking since I felt like the timeline was getting too close.

…to more iterations though? 👁️👄👁️)

Originally, we were supposed to have 3 contemporary dancers vs. 3 street dancers. But, our individual schedules and space availability unfortunately could not accommodate one of the dancers (that I really really really wanted to dance with!!!) — so we moved forward with a lopsided amount.

I could’ve replaced them but I figured time was tighter and it might

🪑 BENCHMARK
performed at Studio 6 @thestudionorthto

A playful collision of street dancers and contemporary dancers on a humble park bench. Celebrating these two worlds and the features that I believe define them both: curiosity, freedom, rigor, and openness of exchange. It’s all just dance!

I’ve been gushing about this process and these people for this whole past week (because that’s when we started the piece…) but I can’t get over how it felt making this one.

The intention of this set went from an overwrought commentary on dance accessibility to… pure joy and playfulness. LOL. After 20 mins of cyphering during our first rehearsal, it was clear we were just whimsical characters who love to dance. And we dove right into that instead! It felt right.

And the double entendre of it all! Studio 6 has been an informal 🔆benchmark🔆 of my own dance journey. My work from the past two editions were fuelled by trying to prove something (to the world, then to myself). But for this one, knowing I couldn’t go bigger than last year, why not strip it all back to both my roots and the movement that currently inspires me most? Beyond fulfilling.

Grateful for this cast for letting me try new things with the most open minds and offering so much to the table (or bench). They made this piece. They ARE this piece. I merely provided a skeleton and the movement became the substance, meat, potatoes, lifeblood of the world.

Truly just scratching the surface of this benchberg, and it was a beautiful dive. 🧡

Premiering Sun Jul 26 at Studio 6 @thestudionorthto

A collision of worlds on a park bench—and the discoveries that emerge from the dust, dirt, and dance. Inspired by the two realms that I’ve been lucky to inhabit lately: contemporary dance and street dance. What will we learn from the exchange?
