Months of training in Mumbai for a marathon in the Himalayas. And somewhere around halfway, I started wondering what on earth I had signed up for.

The plan was simple: train consistently, get stronger, and finish the Adi Kailash Parikrama Run — 42 km at high altitude.

The reality was very different.

After weeks of long runs, Gandhi Tekdi climbs and Kanheri trails, a sore throat and dry cough disrupted my final weeks of training. I still travelled, hoping I could make the most of the preparation I had managed.

On race day, I started at Gunji, around 10,548 ft above sea level. The route took us towards Kuti, at nearly 12,600 ft.

The cold was brutal. The headwinds were relentless. And the higher we climbed, the harder it became to breathe.

Between kilometres 16 and 21, my legs were struggling and every uphill stretch felt endless. At the turnaround, I honestly wasn't sure I had enough left to make it back.

There was no dramatic moment when I suddenly found my strength. I just turned around and started moving.

Somewhere after 25 km, my breathing eased. I found a rhythm, started running again and even began passing a few runners. With about 5 km to go, I thought I might still finish under 6:30.

I missed that target. The final climbs took more out of me than I expected, and I walked the last 700 metres.

42.77 km. 6 hours, 35 minutes. 892 metres of elevation gain.

Not the finish time I had trained for. But a finish I will remember for a long time.

My first two Mumbai Marathons took me over six hours each. Since then, I've been trying to become a stronger, more capable runner.
I still have a long way to go, but this race reminded me that progress isn't always reflected in the clock.

Grateful to have made it to the finish, with the blessings of Mahadev. 🙏

Some races give you a time to remember. Others give you a story. This one gave me both.
