Nearly a year ago we all made the pilgrimage into the dead centre of Australia for Blacken Open Air. A festival born out of The Black Wreath, a metal institution providing a home for artists in the desert with a live music venue, studio and record label all under its umbrella. This space means so much to the people who live in Mparntwe/Alice Springs and the broader metal/punk/rock community across the continent. Blacken is probably the most remote (and best) festival in the world attracting a loving and passionate group of people from far corners of the globe. Right now they need your help! A crowdfunding campaign has been launched recently to raise enough funds to secure the location The Black Wreath HQ sits on… and TODAY IS BLACK THURSDAY. Every donation made today will be matched dollar for dollar (up to 50k). If they achieve their goal it will secure the future of live music in the desert and allow The Black Wreath to keep putting on incredible festivals. We don’t want to see it go into the hands of greedy developers and want to see more amazing events and a space for musicians to hone their skills for generations to come. It would seriously help if you can pick up a shirt or a ticket to their next event or maybe even become a life member! I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot the last Blacken and here are a selection of photos to show proof of how sick this event is. Seriously the best location and curation I’ve ever seen from a festival. I hope to be back soonπŸ€˜πŸ–€

Necrosonic 2026. One hell of a day The third instalment of Brisbane's celebration of all things heavy has been and gone and left one hell of an impact on My body, my wallet my ears and most importantly, my soul. A chance to see some old favourites who crawled and stumbled out of the grave for one last romp. @helmband , @the_berzerker_official , @lynchmada and @fivestarprisoncell . Who all brought the goods, oozing with nostalgia and a pleasant reminder of the Australian metal scene of yesteryears that i fell in love with. Add in some current favourites and new discoveries. Slaughtercult, the Matador, growth, run, f.u.c and neomantra rounding out the audible treats for the day. Top it all off with countless people i haven't seen for years or at least since last year and all the regular gig hounds and you have the makings for a day that filled my cup more then a bartender that owes you money. Till next year necrosonic. Keep it classy brisbane.

@necrosonicfestival has come and gone. My head's mince. In a good way. Somewhere during the day I crossed the 100 different bands in 2026 target. Probably watched 12 full sets and jumped from one band to the other all day. Couldn't tell you which band was 100. Amazing festival. Great bands. Aussie metal. Brisbane metal. Local bands. New bands. Old bands. From the well travelled, to the sharing-an-amp-because-its-expensive bands. So much fun having @fly_or_die666 back on the show again, chatting about their upcoming European tour, new album and tour fundraiser show.
