I‘m always struck by how inevitable the world we inhabit can seem. Geographically, politically, culturally. Of course we find ourselves here, with these borders and beliefs. How could it have been otherwise?

But stories like this remind us of the people who made the world we now stand in. Tired, hungry, frightened, ambitious, brave, loving people, making decisions that would shape the future, sometimes deliberately, sometimes unwittingly. A sleepless night. A moment’s hesitation. A footstep taken a second too late. Sometimes the fate of a kingdom comes down to an arrow finding its mark, or missing it. The smallest things can change everything.

BLOODAXE shines a light on the moments, great and small, that helped forge the nations of the North Atlantic and shape our world today.

I play King Athelstan, England’s first king. A man trying to reconcile faith and power, love and duty, the world he inherited with the one he hopes to leave behind.

Nearly two years spent so far, telling the stories of lives, loves and families 1,100 years ago. And as states became kingdoms, colleagues became family.

It’s been a privilege to be part of this extraordinary group and this incredible story. Long may it continue.

Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been making together.

BLOODAXE. Coming to Prime Video on 20 January 2027.
