As a coach, it's almost like I live the same life over and over again because of the consistent amount of reoccurring themes I see in the average runners journey!

Let me put it this way; well let me put it the way Meb put it 🤣.... It's Better to go into a race 10% under trained than 10% overtrain. But sometimes that "undertrained" side is out of our control because of set back such as injuries. Chris went into his marathon more like 20% undertrained because he had a few injury set backs, but here is the lessen I hope you learn from Chris, and I am going to raise my voice a little here 😂, JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE A FEW SETBACKS DOES NOT MEAN YOUR SEASON IS OVER!
•
Maybe the reason you got hurt was you were pushing to hard anyways, and this injury is a way of your body resetting you to that 10% under trained position.
•
Don't get me wrong, ideally you want to neither under trained or over trained, because that's when the magic happens, but ideally that's not what ideally happens. Yep, I just word vomited 🤮😉.
.
When I ran my PR of 2:21 in the marathon, it was not an ideal marathon build. 7 weeks before the race I had to take 3 days off, missed two key workouts and had an extremely low mileage week, and yet I crushed my marathon.

At the end of the day, the question is, how are you going to handle the set back mentally? If you understand that it could be a blessing in disguise in order to be 10% undertrained, well then there is still hope, and hope is what keeps our dreams alive.

Chris is a living example of this! It paid off with a 10minute PR and a cool experience in Iceland! Very proud of you my friend, and we have even bigger things to come! On to CIM!

Chris just blew me away! We have been working together since the end of October and Chris had a goal of going Sub 4. We found the right marathon, we went over what training would look like and so our game plan was set. Unfortunately things don't always go as they are planned. It seemed Chris had to miss some training, then he got sick and so I started to think his goal of 3:50 might be a little ambitious. He was tired, having a hard time hitting some paces so I was hoping we could still hold this thing together.
.
Luckily, we still kept it in high gear and pushed forward. The weather was perfect and Chris tapered just at the right time. He hit his goal of 3:50 (dude is tough!) and even negative split the second half to finish with his last mile being his fastest! Not an easy thing to do!
.
I think this is a great reminder to my athletes and any others listening! When the going gets tough, DO NOT GIVE UP! There is always hope!

I am super proud of you Chris! You are a baller man! Now on to bigger and better Pr's! You can catch Chris at CIM in the fall!
