POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I was supposed to celebrate my 30th birthday at Koke‘e, but Hurricane Lowell had other plans.

In the end it didn’t matter. My friends pulled out all the stops to make it the best birthday weekend ever. I say that every year. Maybe I just have the best friends ever??! Love you guys so much!!!!!!

Giving Tuesday reminds us that restoration is a collective effort rooted in community, connection, and aloha ʻāina.

Your support helps Uhiwai o Haleakalā return native forests to places where they’ve nearly disappeared, protect precious wai, and create hands-on learning experiences for keiki, ʻohana, and volunteers across Maui.

“Pūpūkahi i holomua.”
Unite to move forward.
— Mary Kawena Pukui, ʻŌlelo Noʻeau #2758

When we give together, we grow together.
Small actions, big impact.
Together, we make restoration possible.

Mahalo nui for growing with us.
Link in bio to donate. 🌿💧

Aloha Lā Kūʻokoʻa!

A time to honor our kūpuna whose aloha ʻāina uplifted and solidified Hawaiʻi’s standing among nations.

At Uhiwai o Haleakalā, we carry this forward in how we mālama our nahele and protect the wai that sustains us.

E hoʻokō mau ʻia ke aloha ʻāina.

“I ulu no ka lālā i ke kumu.”

This ʻōlelo noʻeau reminds us that the branch grows because of the trunk — we grow because of the foundations set by those before us. Kumu means our base, our source, our teachers. The lessons and work of our kūpuna guide what we do today, and the work we do now will become the foundation for the next generation.

🌿 Eō Puʻu Mahoe! 🌿

We had two fulfilling days of mālama ʻāina with MEO Youth Services and our kuʻu Kiaʻi Maui at Puʻu Mahoe.

🌄 Puʻu Mahoe, on the leeward slope of Haleakalā, is home to the Fleming Arboretum, protecting over 100 native plant species.

Week 1:

Haumāna helped care for this rare kīpuka of dryland forest by removing:

🚫Glycine (Neonotonia wightii) – a fast-spreading and invasive vine.

🚫Pāmakani (Ageratina riparia) – a mistflower invasive.

🌿 Kupukupu (Nephrolepis cordifolia) – gently weeded back where it was overtaking ʻalaʻala wai nui and ʻēkaha.

Week 2:
We returned to plant native dryland species:

🌼 Nehe (Melanthera integrifolia) – a bright, daisy-like flower that stabilizes soil.

🌚 ʻĀhinahina (Artemisia mauiensis) – Maui’s silvery dryland shrub and groundcover.

🌳 ʻŌhai (Sesbania tomentosa) – a tree-form variety with stunning coral blossoms, great for our native manu & woodwork.

🙏🏾 Mahalo piha to all who made this project possible:

💚ʻAnakala David & ʻAnakē Connie – caretakers of Puʻu Mahoe

💚 Kaʻāina, Jordan & Nathalya – rare species experts from Hoʻolawa Farm

💚Uhiwai o Haleakalā crew — your aloha drives this work

💚The haumāna of MEO Youth Services for showing up with heart & aloha

We worked hard, had fun, and deepened our understanding of the rare and endemic species of this wahi pana. 🙌🏾Keiki also learned Pule Huikala – He Mū ʻOia, a chant of purification, from ʻAnakala Kaʻiewe and ʻAnakē Maeva.

The day closed with majestic ahupuaʻa views of Keoneʻōʻio and ‘Āhihi-Kīnaʻu, and a sweet treat: ʻAnakala David & beloved ʻAnakē Martha’s legendary Purple Cow ice cream float 🐮🍦💜!

Mahalo e @kaiewe.stiller & ʻohana for joining us and donating snacks, drinks & shoes for our MEO ʻōpio — your aloha made the day even brighter! 💛
