POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We get it straight from the source - we captured some unheard stories and got behind the music - The @rustypelicans also dropped some crazy physical artifact contributions to the #mkehiphoparchive sharing stories and preserving their #hiphop history!! The Rusty P’s aka Rusty Pelicans still continue to prove that #Mkehiphop can thrive on independent distribution, vinyl pressings, and live shows!

Hello community,

We are sorry to share that Ride On! Night at Washington Park Wednesdays is cancelled due to encroaching smoke from wildfires and a persistent heat wave.

There is no plan to reschedule this event.

Music can still bring us joy, please take a moment to follow artists and creatives whose hard work was to be showcased:

Friday JUNE 19 (Happy Juneteenth!) come to @wiggleroommke to listen to the legends, my dudes, @rustypelicans new joint on wax, w/ @djfeedme on the decks. While we celebrate the Art of 3’s new record, I’ll also be paying homage to other local legends, mixing Milwaukee hip-hop with classics from all corners of rap. Friday also marks 5 years (damn time flies!!) since the release of my brother @reggiexbonds album “The Black Tape” [produced by yours truly], so you know I’ll be playing some joints off that. Last but not least, @djjbahr will be bringing it home mixing classic hip-hip with the OG samples. Come kick it and support local.

PS: If you’re a local hip-hop artist w vinyl, bring yours in and I’ll play a joint (9-11pm).

Also, why is there no vinyl emoji?

Hey yo! Here's a snippet I did for the new Art Of 3 album, which is currently being pressed up and getting ready for release. Anyway, the track is called Work Flow. Little background story on the track. My homeboy Phantom Channel hit me up and asked if I wanted to take a stab at the hook, and I happily obliged. I originally dug up a female vocal sample from the 70's that I thought was pretty dope, but I could tell Adam was kinda so so on it when I sent it back. No worries because I used it for a different track. Anyway, I decided to double down and flex a straight up scratch sentence hook. I wanted to send something back that was absolutely not deniable. 🤣 Now, making a scratch sentence hook isn't really that hard if you have a pretty large memory bank for hip hop vocal samples, but, to make it rhyme is a totally different animal. It took me about two days of digging up the samples, and about another day to lay it out, have it make sense, and then record it. You'll see the lay out in the second video, and also you'll hear it on the vinyl test pressing video. I think it turned out pretty good. It's real hip hop to the core. Stay tuned, we're gonna have a good summer!

Hey yo! A few months back I was shooting some messages back and forth with my homeboy Phantom Channel. Some of y'all know Phantom Channel from the one and only Rusty P's hip hop group. That's Milwaukee hip hop royalty for decades now. Anyway, three members of the Rusty P's, Phantom Channel, Dana Coppa & Cadillac, decided to a project called Art Of 3. Phantom asked if I'd be down to go over some of the songs that they've been putting together for an album, and see if I wanted to add cuts to anything, and I without hesitation said "absolutely!". I think I got on like 5 or 6 of their tracks on their upcoming album. I'll be honest, it's some of the better hip hop I've heard come out of the Midwest. Anyway, stay tuned on all that, and in the meantime, I'll be djing for them for some upcoming gigs in the very near future. Peace yall

Finally, after a couple days to rest:

This year Big Beat MKE meant coordinating over 50 different entities between producers, performers, judges, and hosts. In a word, it's exhausting (to be honest.) But it's also so rewarding when you see a packed house every week for two months straight, familiar faces week in and week out, and an event that truly brings together so many elements of Milwaukee music.

A big, big thank you goes out to @djtophermke, @unknownentitymke, @johnsparrow76, @dj_payday, @spacecrimebeatz for stepping up and showing up. Also a big shout out to everyone that had to pinch hit at the last minute (@safs_dk and @kingkamonzi) and throw together a set to perform. Plus the numerous people that lent a hand when we needed someone to keep things moving smoothly.

To all of our hosts, Twan Mack is definitely smiling because of all of you. I could not do any of this without you. You made each night something special.

Thank you to all of our sponsors! We legitimately could not produce a show of this caliber without any of your contributions. Every dollar helped fuel the community that we're creating with this thing, and there's never been more of a communal feeling around the beat battle than this year.

Finally, thank you. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for keeping things positive. Thank you to @thewickedhop staff for making this possible, too. We had so many great moments this year, capped off by @yoshiidfk414 taking his first Big Beat MKE title.

I'll shut up now. But let's keep this momentum up going forward. But one more time... thank you. Thank you to everyone that participated in the Big Beat MKE beat battle this year in Milwaukee.
