Mary Love said something quietly that I keep thinking about: "I struggled, but I made it back."

Not a dramatic declaration. Just a fact. And sometimes that's exactly what a comeback sounds like from the inside ... quiet, earned, real.

A powerful reminder: the next chapter can still surprise you.

She was seven years old. She had survived a war. She crossed the Atlantic on the Queen Mary as a refugee.

And when she saw the Statue of Liberty for the first time, she felt it speaking directly to her: you are safe. You are in America.

Esther Leon's story is about what it costs to get to safety, and what it means when you finally arrive.

What does "safe" mean to you... and when did you last feel it completely?

Why “Sunshine”?

Her father wrote a song for her.

That song became a name. That name became a children's book.

Mary Love didn't just write The Adventures of Papa and Sunshine, she preserved something. The smallest details in a story are sometimes the ones that hold the most love.

Is there a name, a song, or a small family thing that carries more meaning than most people around you know?

Some of the beliefs you're carrying don't belong to you. They belonged to your parents or their parents. Or people living in a completely different world who gave their best, and installed in you what they knew.

But that world isn't this world.

If they don't serve you move on. Not because people are bad. Not as punishment. Just because this is YOUR journey.

The right person for your journey has one very specific quality: They can see you. Not their version of you. Not who they want you to be. Not filtered through their own story.

She's been watching this pattern for over 20 years. Women who have done the work. They have put in the time. They have made the sacrifices.

And still don't fully believe they're worth what they charge.

Naomi Klein created Activate with Naomi because of exactly this. 💙

If you find you’re feeling stuck with writing something (a sales letter; a blog post or social media post; a chapter of your book–anything that requires your creativity, resourcefulness, and thought) try going for a walk and recording the message into your phone. Then transcribe it into a text document and work from that. It’ll be so much easier to tweak and review, and you’ll get it done within hours!
