As part of An Endless Meeting, Rudy Gerson @ruudbboy and Jonathan González @thirdlyrelevant will present "+!?," an ongoing movement and filmmaking practice developed through black-and-white 16mm film.

Working together across a series of reels, the artists move back and forth between performing before the camera and operating it, exchanging these positions without a regularized interval. One person might remain behind the camera while the other moves within its frame before, at an undetermined moment, the relation shifts.

Collectively Singular brings together new and recent moving image works organized around the shared and singular problem of address. Moving between subjects of protest, memorial, dance, the city, and landscape, the films offer incompleteness at different registers of detectability: the crowd and the one. Across these works, the camera is the tool to attend to what can be done together and what must be done alone, with others. Film becomes the place to experience the estrangements of the forms we’ve inherited.
A demonstration unfolds across hands. An arm traces a Berlin memorial. An ensemble dissolves into and out of one another. A parking garage, a vanished record. A coffin emerging in the American landscape.
. Rudy Gerson (b. 1993, New York City; raised in Las Vegas, NV) is an artist, filmmaker, and educator working across moving image, performance, and installation. His practice explores how groups and social selves are formed through shifting frameworks of religion, the family, the party, and spectacle. Engaging forms such as sports, nationalism, dance, and mourning, his work considers how desire becomes collectively articulated through repetition. Working through an obliquely jewish sensibility, his practice asks how inherited forms carry both the weight of capture and the possibility of freedom.

Last night, artists Rudy Gerson (@_ruudbwoy) and Sharon Hayes (@purpleshazey) presented an evening of expanded cinema, featuring works on 16mm film alongside live readings that explored the intersections of desire, protest, and projection across time. Thank you to everyone who showed up for this experience, and a special thanks to Rudy and Sharon for sharing their work with us.

Gerson screened “Hands on Earth (Tuesday, May 14, 2024)” and delivered a live reading of “October 8 (After May 1st).” Hayes presented a performed version of “Gay Power (1971/2007/2012),” a collaboration with the Women’s Liberation Cinema and Kate Millett.

We have many more programs coming up! On Friday, 2/28, @paintedbrideartcenter, in collaboration with @mythmediastudios, will present the zine and podcast launch of “Escape Artist Mixtape: Vol. 5 – Homeworld/Otherworlds.” Then, on Saturday, 3/1, join artist @miradayal and media scholar Shannon Mattern (@atlas.sounds) for a conversation and the launch of “Language Object Index,” Dayal’s risograph artist book. Join artists Rudy Gerson and Sharon Hayes on Friday, Feb 21 from 6-8 pm for an evening of expanded cinema works presented on 16mm film.

Prompted by Rudy’s “October 8 (After May 1st)” (2024), which occupies a similar form and voice to Sharon’s 2012 print series, “May 1st,” this shared evening features Gerson’s “Hands on Earth (Tuesday May 14 2024)” and a live reading of “October 8 (After May 1st).”

Hayes presents a performed version of Gay Power (1971/2007/2012), a collaboration with the Women’s Liberation Cinema and Kate Millett. Both Gerson and Hayes’s works include projected 16mm film and live reading.

Following the works, there will be time for an informal discussion. This event is the first in a series devoted to 16mm and live performance that explores intersections of desire, protest, and projection across time.

In PRACTICE, Afro-Diasporic cultural idioms are interwoven through dance, sound, speech acts and design to incite the critical through-lines of creolized expressive arts formed within the greater geographic contexts. This redux iterates on the larger evening-length work - that premiered at The Clemente in 2022 @lmcc_nyc @r2rfestival —as it aims to guide viewers through a performative practice, celebrate the gift of gathering, and hold space to consider the emancipatory uses of culture for radical place-making and visioning collective liberation through creative practice.

Historias is an expansive citywide initiative that weaves scholarly research, oral histories, and cultural programming to re-center Latinx narratives in NYC. Historias, meaning both histories and stories, is more than just a celebration—it is an urgent political intervention. Historias aims to fill voids in the collective understanding of New York City’s evolution by presenting a more honest, thorough, and intersectional perspective that celebrates the profound impact of Latinx communities.
