*Long post alert*
Aria had been playing around with the smooth fabrics of aerial silk since she was three, but never too seriously.
So earlier this year, when Fly High started prepared its athletes for the aerial sports national championship, and Aditi tai said we should prepare Aria, I was a bit skeptical. Leading up to the championship, I have lost count of the number of times I must have said - “She is only six, far too young. We are doing this just for exposure.” And every time, Aditi would simply say, “She is doing well.” Aria, meanwhile, did what she does best. She approached the competition with every ounce of her focus, took a lot of criticism and feedback (some even from me) in her stride. She corrected every flexed toe, loss of balance, bend of the knee and prepared for the competition. She would say, “Mumma, I will feel sad if I don’t win, but it will be okay. I will try again next year.”

It turns out all the instructors at Fly High believed in my daughter more than I did. They never looked at her as just a six-year-old doing this for exposure. They prepared her, like everyone else, like a serious athlete. I cannot thank the entire team enough - Aasma Khamkar for coming up with the concept of Elphaba for Aria, and for the beautiful choreography; Shantanu and Varsha tai for improving her strength and flexibility; Pranita, Vishwa, Sarang and Runali for painstakingly taking practices and spotting the minutest mistakes; and Sabrina Madsen for the nine-day summer summer intensive that made Aria serious about the sport.
And above all, a big thanks to Aditi for always encouraging my daughter and for orchestrating this rigorous training for all our Fly High athletes. Aria has found some great friendships here.
Lastly, a lot of what Aria is today—her strength, balance, grace and confidence—is all thanks to her gymnastics and ballet training, which she started at 4.5 years. So this post of gratitude will be incomplete if I don’t mention Ms Neha and Ms Nansi. Truly blessed to have some great coaches in Aria’s life, and truly blessed to have a daughter who makes their time and effort worth it.
