SCAN’s mission is to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect throughout the Greater Richmond area.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I was honored to emcee the Rally for Scan event yesterday at Salisbury Country Club. The event involved 2 hours of tennis and pickle ball clinics led by local pros from around Richmond. A luncheon followed with proceeds from the event going to support SCANs CASA program (court appointed special advocates) protecting and representing abused and neglected children in the greater Richmond area. It was a room full of very generous attendees (and good tennis players as well).

It is always a pleasure to be able to attend the SCAN annual breakfast in support of @rvascan. This year the program focused on CASA, featuring both an active CASA volunteer and a GAL lawyer speaking about the impact of this program on children in the greater Richmond area. I always enjoy meeting other supporters at the event as well as learning more.

Poverty, itself, is not neglect. However, financial instability can add stress and make it harder for families to meet their children’s needs.

Virginia's Court Appointed Special Advocates help identify what children and families need to move toward greater safety and stability. 💪👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

⚠ A common misconception is that violence against children only means physical or sexual abuse. However, emotional abuse, neglect, exposure to domestic violence, bullying and exploitation can also threaten a child’s safety and development. ⚠

Court Appointed Special Advocates across the Commonwealth look at the whole picture of a child’s life, helping identify concerns that may be less visible and ensuring that a child’s need for safety and stability is heard and addressed.

Every child in the court system deserves someone who will listen, advocate, and fight for their best interests. For this Richmond family, a CASA volunteer helped make their beautiful forever family possible.

Together, we can work toward a future where every child has a CASA by their side. 💙

Children who are involved in the child welfare system and judicial proceedings related to abuse or neglect are involved with multiple systems:
👩‍⚖️ the court system,
👨‍💻 the child welfare system,
👩‍⚕️ the health care system, and
👨‍🏫 the school system.

As a result, returning to school can be difficult and unpredictable.

Virginia's volunteer CASA Advocates are in frequent contact with teachers and school administrators to form a partnership to better understand the child’s unique strengths, interests, and challenges. These interactions, combined with the volunteer’s relationship with the child, empower volunteers to advocate in court for what the child needs to thrive in the classroom... and in life! 👏

🌟 Focusing on Wellness as Kids Head Back to School

As the school year begins, many children and caregivers feel the stress of new routines and expectations. At CASA, we know how important it is to support both the children we advocate for and our own wellbeing during this transition.

A few simple ways to stay grounded:
💠 Take small moments for calm—breathing, stretching, or stepping outside.
💠 Check in with the kids you support and validate their feelings.
💠 Lean on your support network; connection makes a difference.
💠 Celebrate small wins and give yourself grace.

For more guidance, we encourage you to check out this helpful resource from National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on easing back‑to‑school anxiety:

💙 Let’s continue supporting one another and fostering calm, stability, and wellness.

Tomato dinner number THREE is officially in the books for the 2026 season! 🍅🍷

This time, a few friends and I headed to @zoesvb, and we had the absolute best time! Course after course of tomato goodness paired with incredible wines from Barboursville Vineyards… summer dining doesn’t get much better than this.

We kicked things off at the bar with a Tom Mato Collins before diving into:

🍅 Reception – Whipped lemon ricotta & tomato tart, plus crispy green tomato with pimento mousse and mustard seed.
🥂 Barboursville Prosecco DOC

🐚 Coquilles Saint-Jacques – Tomato velouté, duxelles, puff pastry, and 30-month aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Rich, buttery, and such a beautiful first course.
🍷 2024 Barboursville Vermentino Reserve

🍅 Brandywine Tomato Bisque – Shrimp mosaic, toasted pistachio streusel, and lemon basil. Creamy, bright, and full of tomato flavor.
🍷 2020 Barboursville Nascent

🥩 Braised Short Rib – Roasted tomato ragout, crispy smoked polenta, and garlic kale. Hearty, comforting, and absolutely delicious.
🍷 2023 Barboursville Cabernet Franc Reserve

🥓 Berkshire Pork Belly BLT – Milk bread, Cherokee Purple tomato, Duke’s mayo, butter lettuce, and bee pollen. A seriously elevated little BLT!
🍷 2015 & 2021 Barboursville Octagon

🍅 Tomato Tartare – Everything lavash, Brillat-Savarin, and 30-month aged Parmigiano Reggiano. Such a fun and unexpected way to showcase tomatoes.
🍷 2023 Barboursville Nebbiolo Reserve

✨ Finale: Tomato Macarons – Knotts Island peach & Sungold tomato buttercream. Sweet, summery, and the perfect ending.
🍷 2021 Barboursville Paxxito

Three tomato dinners down, and somehow I’m STILL not tired of tomatoes. 😂🍅 Each dinner has been completely different, and I’m loving seeing just how creative everyone gets with one of summer’s best ingredients.

One more to go and seriously can’t wait!

Tomatoes are getting the spotlight they deserve thanks to this delectable dinner series that took over @yellowumbrellaprovisions on Saturday night 🍅

My very first @summersuppersomm did not disappoint!! I loved every single bite, and I’m still salivating thinking about the steelhead trout course with saffron, and puffed hominy.

Each course featured tomatoes from @villagegardenrva and a wine pairing from @barboursvillevineyards and the dinner itself benefits @rvascan 🍷

As a Yellow Umbrella enthusiast, I loved to see how they transformed their Patterson Ave location with beautiful tablescapes and tomato centerpieces! Big shout out to chef @hansdoxzen and the YUP team for such a delicious tasting menu!

🍅 save this post for your 2027 summer bucket list and send it to a tomato loving friend 🍅
