This past week, the Mexico City Summer Semester collaborated on the creation of a hand-crafted clay mural that reflects the unique journey of our study abroad experience.

IARC student Diana Vermillion shared, “The mural is a direct representation of our study abroad group’s history. The abstract map shows all of our hometowns connecting to Knoxville, and then Knoxville connecting to CDMX. The design gave each of us an opportunity to add our own special touch to the mural, as we all had full control over our hometown landmark.”

More than an artwork, the mural serves as a lasting symbol of the connections formed throughout the program—bringing together diverse backgrounds, shared experiences, and a collective appreciation for design, culture, and place.

🇲🇽 It's a wrap!

We just closed our Introduction to Mexican Culture and Design course — a Summer mini-term at the University of Tennessee Knoxville's College of Architecture and Design — held in Mexico City at the Fábrica de Hielo, an adaptive reuse project by Javier Sánchez, founder of jSa - Taller de Arquitectura. @jsaarquitectura

In this course, students were introduced to Mexican design, culture, and cuisine through documentaries, readings, on-site research, and editorial production.
Before their trip, they also visited a Mexican market in the United States as a first step into examining their own culture by contrast: the Mexico they think they know against what they might actually find in Mexico City, and what their own culture reveals when they are abroad.

As a final product, students produced a printed fanzine documenting their inquiries as an exercise in transmedia narrative, translating their digital research into a physical artifact. We had the privilege of having Sánchez, alongside Mexican architect Aisha Ballesteros, and UTK professor Germán Valenzuela as invited jury members.

Students: Ryan Destefanis, Isacc Griffis, Kailyn Graham, Ali Hamblin, Fernando Jimenez, Della Patton, Katherine Peterson, Logan Smith, Candy Solis, Breezy Stewart, Diana Vermillion, Abigail Wyatt
